Actually the first in line, SOF, CDO etc, are statistically
safer than the next in line - SIRs, GDS and SARs. Because of the
nature of their mission - they are not supposed to engage in large
scale, prolonged combat with the enemy.
Compare with the infantry soldiers. They are expected to engage in
firefights which means the death troll will be higher. Plus they
can die under any set of circumstances - chopper crash, sniper
headshot, naplam fire, artillery shelling, RPG attacks, claymore
mines etc.
