do any of u know those foreigners (s'pore pr) doing ns? r they given the same training and stuff like the s'poreans?

i'm asking coz my frd juz got letter frm cmpb asking him to enlist. problem is, he is malaysian even tho' he's pr. i know the law says PRs must also do ns, but it just feels funny that we need malaysians to help defen our country. i mean i dun mind my frd contributing to the economy n all that (he's grad frm nus, so he needs to serve 3 yrs tuition grant bond), but i really dunno y we shld train a foreigner abt how we fight....

after he serve ns, he will be considered sgrean too so no need to call him a foreigner… be glad he do it as i know those who stay as PR n enjoy the perks of staying here n dun need serve ns… u’ll be glad more ppl taking up duties when u are inside…

i know a taiwan guy or two, and one of my BMT instructors was a malaysian, quite f***ed up too, i might say.

so wat if they have to serve NS in sg? its not like one man can break the spine of the Army.. besides, they arent in very high profile vocations... just an infantryman. big deal.

and to add on, "how we fight" is probably copied very liberally from somewhere else. not to say that the SAF is an Army of copy cats Laughing , but who has combat experience?

“after ns he’ll be considered a sgean” ??!! well… this frd of mine doesnt seem interested in becoming a sgean. he just wants to complete his tuition grant bond. n frankly, i wld rather he do just that. put money into s’pore, rather than eat from our taxpayers money… just hope he doesnt do anything idiotic in the army…

I think being PR is the worst thing in Spore. Why?

You are being forced to serve NS, government excuse is PR and Sporean same treatment.

But not always same. My friend is PR and when his flat is about to renovate to add lifts to every floor. He has to pay 40 000 while his Sporean neighbour pay 500.

His son is in top sec school, and he pays 200 plus a month while his Sporean peers pays 13.

He also dun get all those government subsides but still pay same tax.

same thing happens to my friend too. he's a malaysian and lived in malaysia all his life. his parents are PRs and works in Singapore, thus he comes to Singapore just to do his NS. after ORD, he went back to Malaysia for further studies and will probably settle down in malaysia.

i find that this is rather funny as my friend lives in malaysia all his life. he just comes to Singapore just to serve his 2 years of NS, then return back to Malaysia after ORD.

unless the PR wants to get singapore citizenship, which will be awarded upon ORD, if not it's rather pointless for a PR to serve NS if he don't even intent to stay here.

i have a question. if the parents are PR does that means their children will become PR as well, eventhough they might not come to Singapore?

can the children renounce their PR?

They will be granted PR if the parents apply for them as dependants. But they must be under 21 years old.

Children can renounce PR at 16.5 years old (under old law). Under new law, i am not too sure but i guess it will be 13 since it is 13 for singaporeans now.

If parents did not apply for them. Then they are not PR.

I was a PR. Served NS. And still a PR.

But i guess me serving PR should be more of a reminder to SIngaporeans that if foreigners are willing to serve your NS when they have the choice not to, Singaporeans should be more willing.

And i was in a combat vocation in an active infantry battalion. Not clerk, not service.

Hmm... I'm currently a PR serving NS in SAF too.. But they posted me to a Driver vocation. Whereas, my other peers who have the same qualifications (Diploma) as me get posted to respectable vocations like Signaller, Comms Tech, etc.. Whereas me, I'm just a chao Driver.. what's more, my highest possible rank is only an LCP..

I've also asked around my PR peers, most of them also got into Driver..

I hope to change vocation, but heard that most prob I'll be reposted as storeman..

Why can't I get the same vocations as Singaporeans do? If they consider me as a security risk (cos i'm a foreign passport holder), perhaps they shld check my records properly and see that I've been studying here since I was 7..

3 years ago 30SCE also got 1 ang mo recruit. he was of caucasian and malay parentage. when the unit found out he was a muslim they post him out to a different unit. (my unit)

he can speak ang mo english, malay and singlish. Laughing
