HElo guys,

Would like to ask, if someone go and join French Foreign Legion and then comeback to Singapore after his bond finish to join SAF can? Will they consider your combat experience in the FFL and give you better chance on promotion and pay?

You mean before NS? I d not think it is advisable to do that b4 NS since work does not get you deferment from NS.

If you are talking about after NS, then chances are you might be too old for the SAF to consider recruiting you already. eg: 21 ORD. 5 years FFL = 26 years old.

In addition, I do not think the SAF will give you advanced standing on the basis of your prior experience. You will have to start again.

read on the FFL website regarding this matter. It states that if u mention ur exp in the legion to your country's armed forces, they'd either respect you, or spit on you. Laughing

I think it's illegal for NS-eligible males to join the Foreign Legion.
Even after ORD you are still liable for NS call ups and to some extent are still under military law. Joining a foreign armed force is clearly against military law.

If you go, you need not worry about signing on with the SAF. You might not even be allowed to come back to Singapore.

The only loophole to this is probably if you join the Legion before you hit 18 but then again, I doubt you'll be accepted there for such a short stint and at so young an age.

For the sake of discussion, if someone has already established himself in the FFL and has been given the chance to travel the world to meet interesting people and even kill some of them....... why bother to quit and join the SAF?

Doesn't make sense to me.

I doubt the SAF would know what to do with such a person.... probably make him go round to all the camps and give lectures on his combat experience.

Why don't u write to the Army Recruitment Centre and ask them for their input? It would be interesting to see what they make of it.

You got combat experience so what? Even if you killed an entire platoon with nothing more then you bare hands and wit, SAF’s stand is clear. No degree,master’s or good academics=no promotion priority.

What is DFL? If SFL = Spanish Foreign Legion, then I should point out that the Spanish Legion has not accepted foreiogners for a while aready. At least I think so.

No it isn't. At least not directly. This issue has come up before and a little bit of research suggests that there is no direct ban on joining a foreign army. Nor should there be.

when u join FFL you have to give up citizenship of your native country and become french
so NS has no issue cos u will not be a SG citizen anymore

Unfortunately, you are mistaken. You do not need to give up your citizenship and you do not need to become french.

but i do know that you are given the option after 5 years of service you can take up french citizenship or go back to your original citizenship
