in 35 SCE we have a survey platoon - we are considered the recce personnel of the unit and we get to wear jungle hats too. but we look at the ground to scout...

DivineLightning SG

what does a scout platoon do? anyone have any idea?? it says 4sir scout platoon..

singaporesodapop SG

Don't quote me on this, but in the U.S., where I'm from, a scout platoon usually refers to a sniper-scout team. This is especially true in the U.S. Marine Corps, where the two man team of sniper and his scout are sent to eliminate hostile targets.

I'm not sure if it's any different in Singapore, but I would think that the term "Scout" here refers to recconaissance missions?

Hope this helps!

Obersturmfuhrer SG

Scout platoon acts as the principle humint branch of the battalion. They go out before the battalion to gather information for the Bn S2. Thats as far as I’m willing to go, the rest is still restricted stuff so you gotta find out yourself.

insouciant SG

Congrats! It’s siong but with the right attitude, its a lot of fun. And I’m not being sarcastic.

pwnz0r SG

This should go for other units as well, scouts typically get around on bikes, so it can be a lot of fun. Yes, your platoon will directly be under S2’s command and overall can be a better life compared to a normal trooper.

LazerLordz SG

Ah, that's more like the TA&S, Target Acquisition and Surveillance team? Wink

mhcampboy SG

LOL!! your life will be better indeed!! hahah fat hope laa!! 4 sir is such a cursed unit. be there long time and u know it. your current CO is a maniac laa!! just like the previous one... he is going to expect a lot of things from his coy men. heheh... Mr. Green

singaporesodapop SG

Yup, you got it, LazerLordz. That's what the platoon is called in the USMC. But, I think it's STA-- Surveillance and Target Acquisition.

I had a friend who was a sniper in the USMC. He was stationed in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Coolest guy in the world, you would never think he was a sniper. Anyway, he's out of the Corps now and is working as an auto mechanic.

Heh.

LazerLordz SG

Heh, yeap that's the term. There's one more unit within the USAF I think, RSTA, they add on the recon role to the STA role that the Marines and the Army normally perform.

Closest we have to that in a non sniper role is the 1st Military Intel BN.

singaporesodapop SG

I think I've heard of the RSTA...the best snipers in the US at least, are those from the Marines.

Semper Fi!

The link below should give you an idea what is this vocation about.

every SIR has one right ?

that platoon most siong in sp coy. gets to wear jungle hats

saline SG

SAR units also have.

Gordonator SG

engineer units also have.

lwflee SG

Really meh? New?

LazerLordz SG

70s, already have amphibious recce platoons.. Wink

lwflee SG

Hmmm - sounds more like something that would be done by NDU/Commandoes?

I am sceptical because recce troopers are trained by SOCE in engineer recce already. At least enough to do simple things like route recce/beach recce.

Why would the engineers need another platoon to do recce?

casino_king SG

every combat units have their own scouts. other than maybe commandos, who are more well trained than the scouts.

if you go into scouts and you happen to be the type that love to learn new things... you got it made.

scounts platoon:

Learn Motorbike - scramblers arr.. not vespa arr
Learn Jeep - the type that can go over small rivers and up steep muddy hills
Learn Explosives - OBL would love to recruit you
Learn Map reading - you come out from the army, you will never get lost again anywhere in the world or if you get lost; you will be able to find your way back
Learn survival - you come out of the army, you will never go hungry ever again as long as there are insects and leaves to eat
Learn.............

Learn so many things... if you have to pay for it, ah long also cannot help you

mfscrewu SG

I think comparing scouts with commandos is akin to comparing between apples and oranges. Scouts and commandos operate and are utilised differently, hence different types of training. So in a way, commandos are better trained than scout may not be a reflective statement.
