On one hand, we have to be sensitive to national security
matters. Yet, without this new media, would the public know about
the drowning case and create enough uproar to launch a full
investigation, or would it have been shafted under the
carpet.
The balance is needed, we are a Armed Forces of citizens. Therefore,
we must always take this into account during policymaking.National
security must not be allowed to fully overshadow the right of a
nation to know what happens when accidents or training breaches
happen, comparatively speaking.
This is where discretion has to be applied. We can go into the
framework and layout of the incident, but we have to respect the
sanctity of the investigation effort and not allow undue influence
to enter. That's why sometimes, we must limit discussion to a
certain degree, and this is a fluid judgement according to the
differing merits and circumstance of that case in question.
Cheers.
