New rank structure for Navy?

London9 SG · 2005-08-15T01:45:35+00:00

Commodore is the Royal Navy name for a 1 star RADM. So you would be demoting little Ron!

London9 SG

Now that the Navy is enhancing its capabilities with the new stealth frigates, isn't it time to introduce real navy rank titles rather than army ones to the RSN?

For example:

Officers (existing rank in brackets)

Ensign (2LT)
Sub-Lieutenant (LT)
Lieutenant (RSN) (Captain)
Lieutenant-Commander (Major)
Commander (Lieutenant-Colonel)
Captain (RSN) (Colonel)

Enlisted and Specialists

Seaman (Private)
Able Seaman (Lance Corporal)
Leading Seaman (Corporal)
3rd Petty Officer (3rd Sergeant)
2nd Petty Officer (2nd Sergeant)
1st Petty Officer (1st Sergeant)
Chief Petty Officer (Staff Sergeant)
Master Chief Petty Officer (Master Sergeant)

Warrant Officers would stay the same as they are a traditional naval rank.
Existing insignia would continue to be used.

The way I look at it, sound more like establish rank for vocations, designation and appointment…

London9 SG

Yes, should read 'New rank titles for Navy'

Is this official..... Question

hmsg SG

i don't think there is a need to change... what for? it is already confusing enough....

think of the ah peks... simi seaman, etc....

Gordonator SG

no need to copycat from those ang mo navy lah. Laughing

London9 SG

Just an idea.

Gordonator SG

i don't think a COL will like to be called a CPT. Laughing

London9 SG

He would be a Captain (RSN), a big difference! Smile

Gordonator SG

i believe he would rather be called a COL. Laughing

vIn.Warrior SG

abit aside… thought Lieutenant should be written as LTA?

London9 SG

True

Rank titles in themselves are not important but might be seen as one indication of whether the RSN is a coastal branch of the Army or a real 'blue-water' navy. Now that the RSN is gaining new ships I'm suggesting it might be time to use naval rather than army rank titles.

sgFish SG

yeah i always thought this was a good idea. the current rank system makes it look as if the navy is a subset of the army.

LazerLordz SG

Yes I would agree.

I-like-flings(m) SG

if given a choice.. why not call LAO DA? Mr. Green

London9 SG

And make Ronnie a Vice Admiral. He can't enjoy being outranked by the heads of every other navy, and if he's a three star Admiral, he'll have more influence when meeting foreign Admirals.

Altis84 SG

why must be go and follow the ang mo kind of style... i still think the present one is fine...

have u ever consider the navy land units... those logistic support one how sia... den we will have 2 sets of ranks... so confusing.

London9 SG

The current Navy ranks could be confusing when exercises are held with the US and Australian Navies. Captain or Lieutenant in the US Navy are not the same ranks as Captain or Lieutenant in the RSN.

As long as the rank insignia are the same in all three services, the name changes shouldn't be confusing. After all, the Americans seem to cope OK.

LazerLordz SG

Our Flotilla Commander is a Colonel and he meets with the Captain of the USN Task Force. That's working pretty fine on the rank side. But to enlarge the role of the navy..somethings gotta change.

VADM Ronnie Tay sounds much nicer.

Gordonator SG

agreed. RADM(2-star) Ronnie Tay sounds so weird. Laughing
