they're being distributed in 41sar. from what i heard, the ones in seletar are getting it too.

i support the idea of pdas to cut down paperwork, no more wasting time printing F-certs and all that crap. just zip it into the IC's pda, and bluetooth it to anyone necessary. being digital, will be easier to locate a particular serial no. if necessary (rather than go through 120 of them just to realize 1 weapon is missing).

though i don't support giving pda-phones to every other officer. they'd just end up blue-toothing each other all day.

I doubt paper work would be eliminated anytime soon. Instead of putting money here (and in other unnecc outlets like designing a new PT singlet), i would rather they pour more money into training. The SAF's training is not 'there'.

we spent the entire friday evening teaching the WO how to use the pda. there's a very big yellow sticker behind, property of SAF, with all serial numbers and barcodes and stuff.

so who developed the applications ?

the last time i used their HP Jornada series..they were explaining to me i could send SITREP, use the GPS ..send msgs to my OC etc...all i need to do was to use the bluetooth connection to connect to the external GPS/modem module which i held in my other hand ..so that during battle i can allow my OC to have a clearer view of the battle..

then i asked him if the GPS/modem could be used under foliage ? he said no..
then i asked him if the GPS/modem and the PDA has to maintain line of sight he said yes.

i asked him how i send msg to my boss during a battle in close up or under folioage ..and u expect me to connect to your server holding the bloody PDA and GPS/modem in both hands while fighting ??

he looked at me and agreed....WTF ....

excessive budget. govt unit needs to exhaust their budget so that they can apply for fatter budget in the following FY.

i dont know about having less paperwork or being environmental-friendly.

ever since IT is introduced to workplace, more papers are being used (with all the printings, even emails with only two liners).

that's weird. bluetooth doesnt require line of sight mah. and also, if you and your OC are both under foliage, it really shouldnt matter. of course, bluetooth's range is abit limited, and this poses practical limitations.

also, we wont need to send sitreps during a firefight. more like at the end of a situation, or at a fixed time.

nevertheless, i agree that in deploying tactical electronic solutions, a more holistic and practical view has to be taken, rather than deploying a particular solution to solve a particular problem, and choosing the solution from a purely technical point of view.

sorry..got the equipment mixed up .PDA to GPS/modem no issue no need line of sight..but from GPS to sky ..need line of sight.but i recalled the ST guy attached to me saying if i placed the GPS modem into my pouch or SBO compartment, the PDA will lose connectivity.So i can't really recall either. With regards to the SITREP, that was very much what the PDA could do ..send msgs and SITREP to my bosses...and tracking movement...And i don't think using the PDA during night movement is the wisest of ideas with the big touch screen all shimmering in the night ..haha...

i seen pictures of US troops in Iraq using the HP 5550 series of PDA attached to some green color housing to make it more durable in terms of withstanding knocks and shocks and battery , and they use it to send data back to their forward operating bases. And during my course of studies, i had seen some prototypes of the HP PDAs being connected to the signal equipment to act as a rebro and repeater sending out signals back to the bases. .Sorry guys it was printed in The Age newspapers here in Australia, so it kinda of NPNT hehe..

Sitreps can be sent through the signal set anyway. New signal sets also have GPS built in (i think) so i think this is a case of using technology for its own sake. At best this technology should be a last ditch measure and should be relegated to no more testing situations than POI.

The green housings are milspec grade for use in combat environments.Using a XDAII in its original, unreinforced casing is not very wise.

It is interesting to note how this experiement pans out, and whether your unit can really harness the multiplier effect that is supposed to be acheived by hooking everyone up.Because the learning curve for the WOs is steep and at times during exercises, things like these may fail and those who are overreliant on them may find themselves stuck.

well for the way technologies are creeping into our everday lifes,so mnay of our equipment are battery powered,will 1 day be wars be won when the enemy is drained of batteries,and can't carry on its battle ? likely not though ,but if it ever happens.i'm not surprised

they using their own sim card. so they're paying their own bills.

the only good thing out of this, is that now we can all use our pdas in public without fear of extra or whatever nonsense.
