Study VS National Service!!!!!! urgent!!

Hi there. I haf graduated frm poly this yr. And i haf been reserved a place in NTU for the academic year 2007/08. However, my NS enlistment letter states tt the enlistment date for me is in september. This would mean tt i will onli ORD in september 2007! NTU's sch term begins in late july, which means i will miss the enlistment in 2007/08 and will haf to wait for the next acad yr!!!!

I do not think tt there will be so many official leave for me to clear to be able to enter ntu in 2007. I've heard tt it is possible to apply for disruption to NS so tt one can study in uni. But, i haf a few queries abt it:

1. for my case described above, will my application for disruption be "not approved"? especially as i will be left wif only 2 months of NS

2. when muz i serve the remaining period of NS? after graduation? (which is 3 yrs by the way...) or during weekends and/or sch holidays?

3. during the period of disruption, will i get back my civilian pink NRIC. If not i will haf to hold on to tt SAF 11B for 5 yrs! (2yrs NS and 3yrs study)

there is an GOM directive states that you can ord earlier if you go working or study which the date is earlier than your ord date….

wow...gt such thing ar? i will offcially ORD on 9th September 2007. Can bring this date forward to july?! tts 2 months leh....is tt possible?

U will disrupt for studies and return to serve the remaining 2 mths after graduation.... since the sch hols will not be more than 2 mths... it means u can't serve out during breaks....

and let say if i fail any modules (touch wood!) or suddenly ki-siao go honours yr, can the disruption period be extended?

1.) Yes, u can disrupt and go for the studies even when u have 2 mths of service left.

2.) I dun think u can serve during holidays because I never witness one. But it is best to check with ur unit Mr. Green
Every case I seen it, degree come back, serve the remaining service term.
Pro: U can take ur time to look for a job. 2nd, enjoy the "break" before stepping into the workin world.
Con: Ur soldiering skill/stamina is super rusty so it may impede on ur service. Especially, after u come back, immediately kena big big exercise. 2nd, when u manage to find a dream job while in service, u are stuck in SAF. Confused

Yes you can serve your remaining liability during your term break.

And For Your Information, 1 year of leave is only 14 days. U have to clear your leave every year and cannot accumulate. Therefore, You can CAN disrupt 1 week before your term starts.

And also, since you only need to serve back 2 months for them, most likely you will end up during jobs not relevant to your vocation. ie. if you are combat, you may most likely end up doing admin for 2 months.

I have applied for disruption and I know the directive quite well

since you are going to be enlist in july, the earliest you can disrupt is after serving 22 mths of service.

You can come back to serve in your holidays provided that you can serve in one continous period (no re-disruption is allowed), the maximum number of years you can disrupt is 4 years but I think extension will be given (e.g. if you failed) provided you applied again tn time.

The leave policy had changed for those enlist from 2004 Dec.. they cannot longer bring forward their leave so I doubt you will have enough leave to clear.

Please apply 3 months before the term starts.

so the policy for the different time of enlistment which corespond to the number of months you need to serve before you can disrupt from service for tertiary education still remains?

if i am not mistaken, if you are enlisted in aug or feb, you juz need 20months or something like that, right?

I think it is depending on when you enlist... I was enlisted in oct so I only need to serve 20 mths but if you are enlist in june, you need 24 mths...

So I suppose you need about 21-22 if you enlist in setember.. regardless of whether you in JC or poly...
