Enquiries on the vocation Intelligence Officer

i am thinking of signing on with the army as an intelligence offr. Have a few qns regarding the vocation and really hope someone can help me with the answers..

What is the nature of the vocation? Does it comprise of the work of scouts, or isit just manning intell equipmts in the office?

Will i be rotated between outfield and, say, HQ? How long is each tour (if there are rotations of jobs)? Are there overseas posting?

Is intelligence considered a service or combat vocation? Was q confused coz the army website consider it a svc vocation but the application form states tt its combat.

How is the application and selection procedure like? As i still have one more yr to graduation from the uni, is it too early to submit my application? Do i have to be majoring in political science to be considered for this vocation?

It should be dual role and a concurrent appointment in a unit too, usually as S2 or Scout PC I think.Therefore it has to be combat.

Usually will have different tours of duty, each lasting 2/3 years(?) got staff tour combat tour etc..

Besides battalion S2 and scout pc, still got appointments in higher HQ, DIV G2, G2 Army, Mindef etc(?)

Have 2 frens who are IOs in the navy. Since they are getting combat pay, I [b]assume it is a combat vocation.

Once u have submitted ur application, wait for ur interview.(if u r shortlisted) Dunno if its too early to submit but its still worth the try and nope, u dun have to be majoring in political science to be considered cos as far as i know, i of my IO frens is majoring in economics while the other only has a diploma.(in multimedia i think)

sign as an office yes. choose vocation yes such as GDS, INF, ARTY, ARM, SIG, ENG, NAVY or Air Force but intelligence offr NO.

No choosing of such post. it a post and not vocation. oni posting to of such appointment oni. just like you sign on as office but you dun get to sign on and become CDF right away. if want than will get, which army you think you are in? LOL.

Hi Joshua, from your other posts, I guess you are a regular yea? Anyway, I was doing some recruitment drive some time back, and I did recall a series of booklets regarding signing on as officers. There are a few, and one of them was about "signing on as an intel officer"

The booklet is white, with pictures of officers in no.1, printed on high quality pearl paper, recall seeing anything like that?

I don't know who is right here, got to wait for someone to clarify Mr. Green

you maybe right... but as i mention, it a post and not a vocation. you can tell them you intention of becoming an intel office but will you get or not it another story. still have "a" course to clear. to be an intel officer, one has to be an office 1st which is to pass OCS.

for officers, it just one of the many posting or tour which some get and some dun for some reasons.

Im asking abt this "vocation" (not sure one la) coz i was intending to fill up the application form online and got stumped at one of the boxes.
First the form asked me to choose "signing on as officer or specialist", followed by "awards" (n.a. btw), then "appointmt in log/combat/engg", then "vocation" and intell is one of htem.

btw the recruitmt offr jus replied to me by email saying, (i quote) My advice is for you to complete your studies before you apply to sign
on as an intelligence officer.
We would require you to submit your resume to us then.

So it means i really have to wait till end of my studies? The last time i happened to talk to a police recruitmt offr, she told me (for police) i can apply as early as 6mths b4 graduation..

Things have changed now. It might have been so during ur time, but I remember clearly they had interviews for potential IOs during my bmt(which was 2.5 yrs ago). Both of my frens happen to be my batch mates in ocs and although they are in the navy, they still belong to the intelligence service.
They passed their IO interview b4 entering ocs. Wink

just on peace time training, how can one react or think when he had not done any ex. again any HQ staff ie CO, S1 to 4, QM etc, will have to be in/a Coy comd b4 he is able to carry out his job in HQ as he will be able to relate more to his job to be done. forget about this, too many details need to be in put here.

they may have pass the interview and may have pass OCS but will they get the post? will they stay in the post forever? be in NAVY, ARMY or Air Force, all have the own intel offr. as a YSL, most likely a Dy S2, Scout PC and how many will become a G2?

things do change but war still fight using live round and not papers.
back to the topic, for those who wish to sign on, be it intel offr or whatever vocation, offr or spec. please find out more what you will get b4 do so.
as for the topic starter. just a question for you, do you really want to sign on as an intel offr and as what KKK84 had say his pal belong to the intelligence service but from what i see they may not be doing any intel work? the best is ask someone you know who is closed or you went to the ARMForce and ask. practice to be a back stabbing person 1st.
one thing i can say is that one of your daily routine will be reading news papers. well that is one way of getting intel... LOL. it how you extract that all.

i still stand by my point... it a position, appointment and not a vocation. a vocation of such was created for some other reasons. not so much for a army.

Maybe i can relate wat i gathered from my IO frens. Firstly, u have to have a certain vocation before u can be a full-fledged IO. (ie. for those IOs in the navy, they have to get their Certificates of Competence (COC) and Bridge-watchkeeping Cert (BWC) b4 they are actually posted back to the intelligence service. This will normally take ard 2 yrs.)

Secondly, wat Joshua1975 said was spot-on. Pls dun expect to do much hardcore intel work since ur initial contract is only 5 yrs. So lets say u spend 2 yrs in an operational unit, u'll only get 3 yrs doing very limited intel work.(This was wat an IO told my fren b4 he signed on 2 yrs ago)

Wat i must add is that be prepared to write lots and lots of intel papers for ur superiors. Wink

there IS an IO scheme.

it was launched recently. furthermore, it is a JOINT service scheme, and hence does not belong to the army, navy or airforce.

perhaps this, and the nature of its work, is why it is not so well-known, and so misunderstood.

intelligence as we all probably know it - scouts, BRC - is just one facet of the entire spectrum of military intelligence. there are more - lots more.

for the poster who wish to sign on as an IO, no, there is no requirement for a specific degree in order to become an IO.

im not sure if u have completed ur ns. since the vocation is IO, its obvious that one has to be an officer to qualify.

as for advancement, it depends on the specialisation. but the general tours - command, staff, instructional - still apply. the nature of the work will also depend on the specialisation.

and IOs can be both combat and service. Wink

you would probably like to find out more from ARC. but i think you wont be able to find out too much - for obvious reasons. apply and wait for the interview. that would be your best bet. so in case you discover it is not your cup of tea, do put in second and third choices in your application form.

i see.. erm im female, so have never served ns. but i heard female graduates who sign on undergo bmt in safti and, if nothing goes wrong, subsequently go into ocs by default right? Im thinking of applying now coz im quite set on this (saf) as my career choice and dont want to sit around and waste time after i graduate, esp if the applicn processing is going to take a long time..
