Gee, thanks a whole lot, dragonstar!
Jumping's good fun, but after a while one can get tired of
it.
Anyway, back to the original question. If you take it back to WW2,
Airborne and Parachute were not the same thing. Back then, Airborne
meant you came in by glider, not Parachute. One detail of Band of
Brothers that guys from the PIRs objected to was the song that the
men sang while they ran. The actors sang "we're Airborne infantry",
while the veterans insisted that the paratroopers would only sing
"we're parachute infantry". Along the way, they stopped using
gliders and Airborne and Parachute became synonymous.
