sidestep1984 SG i think tats wat i said...they need infantry to take over an objective in the end... i was just stating why both needs both ...thats all... dunno why everyone talks abt guardsmen so much and looks at infantry as the sore older brother..
Icemoon SG That was not what I understand. I mean they do not have the same objective. Guards neutralise the enemy for the armour and main force to punch through. The Guards commander won’t say “shit, how come so many soldiers at our objective. Call in infantry reinforcement”.
wuming78 SG SAF (and militaries around the world) is adopting the COMBINED ARMS concepts of operations for good reasons. no single arm can survive and win a war on its own. well. the prestige factor from hearsay, publicity, toughness in training and requirements, and higher exclusivitiy, all contribute to this "abang-adik" perception.
sidestep1984 SG 2 examples why both coexist for each other and to other units as well...... Guards strike objective A.. Infantry (u may say armour too) occupy objective A..Guards then move on to a new objective...... cycle continues Guards occupying an objective for an extended period of time is a waste to their skills and talent... another example... Infantry moves en masse to Objective A... A portion(maybe a flank) is barraged by missile batteries or artillery... so they need reinforcements quickly.... so Guardsmen will be sent in to bolster the weakened units... tit for tat...everyone needs everyone... like the 101st in WW2.... Guards arent occupational units....they're an 'offense based-aggressor' unit.. Infantry on the other hand tends to be jack of all trades but never an expert at anyone of them..
Gordonator SG it's very easy. let say now i'm a CPL, my basic allowance is $450. if i'm a guardsman, i will be getting $200 as my combat allowance, which will be $650 if i'm a commando, i will be getting $300 as my combat allowance, which will be $750 if i'm in a cambat unit other than guards and commando, like infantry and armour, i'll be getting $100 as my combat allownace which will be $550.
Gordonator SG for your info, combat enginners is not a combat unit, they are a support unit. they won't be getting combat pay like infantry. if i'm not wrong they are getting some kind of combat support allowance...
Icemoon SG Yar, I know, me from combat unit. Every year only cdo, gds, sir or sar are eligible for the best combat unit award. But combat engineers are still combat vocations mah, so I dunno they go by combat vocation or combat unit rule.
kaysquare SG Guardsmen are highly mobile fighters, which is why they are heli trained. Their choppers can take them into enemy territory, though not as covert or fast as CDO. Their objective is not to guard an objective, but rather weaken/capture an objective and pass it to support infantry bn to occupy. They by themselves will be too weak to defend it, but they are agile and with a silght firepower edge over normal infantry, esp at the bde side. Ready to Strike. Hope that helps.
kaysquare SG The capbadge for the beret is issued to those under command of 7th bde, which will include hq and 3 gds and 1 guards. can someone confirm? yes, u can imagine the guardsmen to be like the marines of the us army. they are used for first strike, and not primarily for occupation.
sidestep1984 SG heard from a guardsman that onli 3rd guards and 6th SIB wears the capbadge for historical recognition.. i cant remember where but its somewhere in www.armydaze.com what does everyone think?
Gedanken SG The difference in combat allowance sounds about right. I don't know how the pay scales have changed since I ROD'd (not ORD'd, mind you - shows how far I go back ), but my take-home pay as a Commando corporal was about the same as that of an NSF infantry 2LT. The infantry officers earned a bit more than us, but we didn't have to make CPF contributions. It's been a while, but back then I think our combat allowance was $200, on top of our rank pay - if I recall correctly, my last drawn pay was $545. Also, once a year we got $300 for completing one jump in each quater of the year.
Gordonator SG i seen before green beret and blue beret put on the guards capbadge? anyone know why? i though only guards can put?
sidestep1984 SG i heard from a guardsman that anyone under 6SIB(or 7th..forgot the actual number..but am sure it is 6..memory is abit sketchy cos under 6SIB contains other vocations too) wears it...whether infantryman or whatnot... some historical significance of sorts.... would love to get official clarification on this though...dont take my word for it though
sidestep1984 SG ahh...ok 7SIB then...so let me rewrite...is it correct to say that anyone under 7SIB wears the capbadge even other arms than guards?... off topic even more... What units are in 6SIB?
Gedanken SG No, I meant that when I finished my days as an NSF, it was still ROD - ORD only came in the next year, if I recall correctly.
Gordonator SG can't possibly be OCTs cos OCTs wears the white circular capbadge (pic below) not the guards capbadge. OCT capbadge this one is the guards capbadge.
