Hey, which is your emphasis - the SAF itself, or NS in general?
~lol~
The SAF's role is to ensure the protection of Singapore, period. Up
to you on how to intrepret this - whether in terms of operational
readiness,
or meeting existing safety & security challenges, or as a model
for nation building, or strategically participating in UN
peacekeeping missions, et al.
If you can, try to attend one of them OCS commissioning parades, or
at least read (online/print) transcripts of the speeches given.
Propagandic as it may sound, they do serve as serious reminders for
the newly-appointed leaders on what's expected of them.
Google around for, in particular, Wong Kan Seng's addresses; I find
him to be the most fluid of speechmakers on this topic.
