Smith suffers horrific leg break

Smith had only just recovered from an ankle injury
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson expects Alan Smith to be out for a long time after he suffered a horrific leg break against Liverpool.
Smith collapsed in agony after he tried to block a John Arne Riise free-kick in United's 1-0 defeat in the FA Cup.

A grim-faced Ferguson said: "It's one of the worst I've seen. He's broken his leg and there's a dislocation of the ankle joint.

"It's a very long-term injury - we're all behind him as he's a brave lad."

The game was delayed by five minutes as Smith received treatment and he needed oxygen as he was stretchered off.

United's medical team were given help by Liverpool club doctor Mark Waller as the midfielder waited to be carried off.

Ferguson added: "I wasn't aware of what had happened because I was following the path of the ball, but you saw the reaction of the players round about Alan and you knew it was a bad one.

"It is another bad blow for us and it sums up our season."

Ferguson's counterpart Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was quick to offer his sympathy to Smith.

"We're all so sorry and we can only wish him all the best for the future."

Wa ... worst than Cisse . All my sympathy to Smith .

dat was awful... hope he can recover in time for world cup campaign. otherwise his dream is going to shatter.

Patrik SG

Harry Kewell played damn well today.
Always looked dangerous whenever he had the ball.
Dun understand why Benitez sub him.
With Luis Garcia and Harry Kewell,Man United defence had a lot of work to do.
And that Sissoko,man..i think he is the next Patrick Vieira.very tough.

798 SG

hanor. i feel smith must be cursing that old fergie for fielding him.

Poolman SG

Think without the injury , he also won't be feature by Ericsson , the England set-up is almost done , the midfield is finalised liao .

798 SG

the goal man utd conceded was outright stupid..

how the heck do people not defend the posts during set pieces?if anyone had been on either end of the poles the ball would have been cleared.. Laughing

schoolboy schoolboy defending..

and their midfield kinda suck..how can they play 4 wingers along the midfield 4?

poor smith..he gave his heart out for a useless cause..and the ball suay suay must fly right into his ankle when he balancing on one leg.. Confused

but pool dominated the midfield..too much brawns for the man utd midfield..

deserved win although the goal was disappointing in utd eyes.. Laughing
