Thinking of A Career, help please?

Shotgun SG

Yo. Wondering if any of the forumers here are regulars in the SPF. Would like to find out what is working in the Police force like.

Is it an exciting and rewarding career?
What is typically done by junior police officers?
How is the posting determined, eg dog unit, STAR, or police post duties?
How long are you bonded for?

Also, if the eyesight is ABOVE 500 degrees for each eye, can I still apply? Would the application be even considered?

I am Currently Serving NS in a combat engineer unit. Pes B.
6 GCE O'level holder, but considering SPF after finishing a poly diploma after NS.

Hi shotgun,
yup, its an exciting career as you get to meet people from different walks of life everyday. You will also be able to do escorts of illegal immigrants or robbers in a police vehicle. You will also be able to attend to fatal accidents like 'sky-diving' which is also known as jumping down from a building, and also murder cases.. For some shifts, you will be working at the front desk doing lost/found reports, changing of IC Address, disputes, answering calls and many more..

The posting depends on the availability of the unit/division and also your preference. Let's say for Police Coast Guard, if they have like 50 vacancies and you are putting PCG as your first choice, you will most probably get in.. But if division lacks of people, you might be pulled to division. You have only 2 choices to be made. Most people might want to go into Division first before going into specialised units as you get to learn more things on the ground first..

as for those who have not completed NS, you will be bonded for 5 years, including 2 1/2 yrs of NS. Your BMT in Police academy will be 6 months and you will be doing training and studying of law, police procedures, weapon training and many more.. Since you are Pes B, you will be able to join the Police Force, but as for your EyeSight, I'm not very sure about that, they might consider you on a case-by-case basis.. So if you are joining SPF after your NS, your pay will be an additional $200 and your bond should be 2 1/2 years or 2 years..

Well. The primary concern is my eyesight though. Cos its above the 500 degrees indicated for a JPO. Its about 800 actually. I usually wear contacts or glasses. With them, I can see clearly. *Duh* I mean, there isnt much difference between 500 n 800 really, in both cases one doesnt see much without specs.

In anycase, I think I would quite enjoy dog unit, or maybe even CNB. As for STAR team, well I guess thats really much later in the career before I consider doing something like that. As for firearms, I don't really have problems with them. I've fired stuff frm pistols to rifles.

(no, i do not have specwar background)

What is done at division anyway? Neighbourhood patrols? What else?

Shotgun SG

Oh, and forgot this question.

What is the rank/pay advancement rate like?
(I always believed that rank is best used to collect money)

Is it a certain standard rate, or is it highly performance based?

Is it as screwed up as the army, where regular slackers will advance in rank as long as their time comes? I hate those bastards.

Is it possible to become a "detective" starting as an SPO?

Understand SG

1) You need to have at least a degree to be a SPO.

Direct Intake for INSP - Degree
Direct Intake for ASP - Good Honours Degree.

www.spf.gov.sg has all the answers to your questions.

hi there... i can see that you are contridicting you post... u state here that u wanted to be a JPO but your next post u state that you want to be a SPO.... so pls make up your mind.. =)

as for JPO pay will be like this....

http://www.spf.gov.sg/career/protect/protect_salary.htm

but for the question of spectacle i dont think we can answer you much as the final decision still lies with our recruitment centre... i do have a Squad mate which has around 600+ for each eyes and he is still a policeman... perhaps i shld have told you that he is also a ASEAN TKD representative too..... so as for the basic criteria i believe you shld be clearer then us for now... and its good that if you consider to try 1st before feeling rejected....

but do try a few times if u are really keen to join, as i do have colleagues that actually tried a few times sending the application form and was finally accepted... of cos i wont know why he was be rejected or accpeted in the end... but its a career that can gif you a unique kind of satisfaction that you will never get from other employment.... hope these helps~

cheers Mr. Green

qazplm SG

ok... as for SPO... u can refer to below...

http://www.spf.gov.sg/career/enforce/enforce_salary.htm

for a police officer there are no vocational allowance or wat... instead its base on the specialist dept that you are in to qualify for the specialist allowance.... as for promotion, its under Manpower Dept to decide on it and i cant actually tell u the "scenario" u stated that u hv "experiance" in SAF will actually exist in SPF.....

as for SPO.... JPO... Scholars or even Executive Mgmt(civilian post)
do check out this website below...

http://www.spf.gov.sg/career/

they are spilt into the four sub categories that you have seen in that particular website for eg. Protect, Enforce, Scholars and Serve respectively....

hope that my comments does help u in a way or rather....

cheers~ Mr. Green

If you are a poly grad and your performance is good, promotion within 3 years is not a problem nowadays.

As for SO posting, i'll be honest and tell you it is difficult nowadays. The SPF get its pick of fresh grads nowadays so promotion from PO rank is far and few.

If you really want it, be prepared to work for it. That means aleast 2 years as NPCO, 1 or two years as IO (investigation officer), and least 1 year of staff work (OPS). It is necessary as IO and staff work allows you to be high profile and gives you a better chance to be selected. You can apply for SO selection, but it has to be endorsed by your immediate supervisor and vetted by the respective Cmdr/Dir. Only then you go for the second round of interview conducted by Manpower Department.

Assuming you are selected, you get have to return to TRACOM for your 1 year SO training course(or known as 'C' course). And FYI, you start at the bottom of the SO rank, as AI (Acting Inspector) for 1 year, PI for 1 year and finally as a normal Inspector.

You think this is worth it, go ahead. By the time you reach your Inspector rank, you will be in your late 20s to early 30s. And your career options are fairly limited.

Consider fresh honours grads
(male:25, female:23) with second upper and above come in with ASP rank and you figure out where u r in the pecking order of things.

I am not out to prick your bubble but this is what u must expect if you intend to climb from PO to SO.

If you stay as PO, you should be able to get your SI (Station Inspector) by your early to mid 30s if you dun screw up.

Shotgun SG

So what are ur views of JPO as a career? Prospects?

Sorry, What i meant was, JPO 500 degress, SPO 800 degrees. Why the difference?

I don't really have an interest in becoming an SPO. Or at least still not considering that. So it is possible for a junior police officer to climb to a senior police officer? Of course, I think its sort of like specialists climbing to warrant then converting to commissioned officer in the army. Which is a bloody waste of time. Am I right?

koxinga SG

JPO, it really depends. Your max pay at SI level is around 3plus coming to 4. Job wise, is ok, but also depend on vocation.

As for SPO, i told u it is difficult. But if your interest is there, there is no harm trying. But must be realistic and not expect to become DSP in afew years. More than likely that you will retire as ASP 2.

I tendered my resignation on the 1st April after 6 years in the SPF. Cool
