Ground-floor
unit in Bedok Reservoir catches fire; no injuries reported
SINGAPORE: A unit on the ground floor of a Bedok Reservoir HDB
block caught fire on Saturday afternoon (Feb 6). Nobody was
injured, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
SCDF said that they were alerted to the fire at Block 624 Bedok
Reservoir Road at 12.35pm. The fire, which was extinguished using
two water jets, involved the contents of a bedroom, it added.
A resident from the area, Ms Lee Yan, said that when she arrived
at the scene at 12.50pm, much of the fire had been put out and most
of the residents of the block had also evacuated.
She said that residents from the units on the third and fourth
floors that were directly above the affected flat, told her that
when the fire occurred, there was no one on the first and second
floors. Ms Lee Yan added that most of the residents were still in
their pyjamas at the time.
SCDF said approximately 40 residents from the block had already
self-evacuated prior to their arrival.
Later on Saturday afternoon, MP for Aljunied GRC Pritam Singh,
reminded members of the public to "stay safe, mindful and vigilant"
as they welcome the Chinese New Year and long weekend break.
Mr Singh said he had been at the scene of the fire, the cause of
which "has not been established".
"Luckily, no one was hurt, and that was down to the quick work
of neighbours and the Singapore Police Force, who assisted in the
evacuation effort," said Mr Singh, who also described the SCDF as
"thorough professionals".
