SINGPORE: Two people, including an 8-month-old baby, were
injured on Wednesday afternoon (Aug 26) following a blaze at Teck
Whye Avenue.
The infant was sent to National University Hospital for
suspected smoke inhalation, while the other person injured, a man
in his fifties, was sent to the same hospital due to a cut on his
left shin from falling debris.
The contents of a unit's master bedroom on the 10th floor of
Block 3 had caught fire, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force
(SCDF). It had caused a black plume of smoke to pour from the
unit’s window.
Channel NewsAsia understands that the infant was in a 12th floor
unit at the time, while the man was on the ground floor of the
block. Both were sent to the hospital conscious.
It is also understood that some of the floors in the block
experienced a power outage following the fire.
Singapore Power, responding to a query by Channel NewsAsia, said
it has received no reports of any power outages in the block. It
added that the Town Council has not received any complaints.
SCDF said it was alerted to the incident at 2.42pm and sent two
fire engines, two support vehicles, two ambulances and a red rhino.
The fire was extinguished within half an hour using a water
jet.
There was no one in the unit when SCDF arrived, SCDF added.
It is understood that about 20 residents from the block
self-evacuated after the fire started.
SCDF is investigating the cause of the fire.
