SINGAPORE: One person was sent to hospital after an ammonia gas
leak near the Tuas Checkpoint on Friday morning (Jul 31), the
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said.
A 68kg ammonia gas cylinder
ruptured in a room on the first floor of a three-storey building
along Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim at 8.45am, said SCDF in a news release.
Two fire engines, three hazardous materials response vehicles, an
ambulance and a support vehicle were deployed.
SCDF said when it arrived, the
Company Emergency Response Team (CERT) had switched off connecting
valves to the ruptured cylinder to isolate the source of the leak.
Hazardous materials specialists from Tuas Fire Station flushed away
the residual ammonia gas from the ruptured cylinder with a water
jet.
About 80 personnel were
evacuated from the premises, said SCDF. A man who complained of
difficulty in breathing was conveyed conscious to hospital. He also
felt discomfort on his face and throat and SCDF helped
decontaminate him by washing him thoroughly with water before he
was sent to hospital.
