Divorce Lawyer Fee: How much my ex pays

My ex hired a lawyer. he acts for her in all cases. He has appeared in four cases so far. (family violence case, contested divorce case, appeal case, child maintenance case). I agree he may not be an expensive lawyer, as his poor office is in Tong Chai Building. But wonder how much my ex pays to him. He seems sucking, but still my ex patronize him. (I don't have a lawyer, I act in person).So far he has appeared in 5 hearing days, 8-10 Pre trial conferences, and have prepared 5 affidavits and 2 submission for appeal and an objection.

Can any give an educated guess for the money she may have spent?

Probably several thousands. But why she need too hire a lawyer in the first place ?

Are you giving her a difficult time with the divorce settlement and child custody ?

You know , when you punish her you are also punishing your own child right ?

if she don't need to constantly fight you over these issues..she wouldn't need lawyer to fight for her.

If both of you continue to drag out the divorce and fight over the settlements, the fee may go beyond 9k .

I know of someone who fought hard and spent more than 20k on her case.

My suggestion to divorce couple is to split up amicably, if can go for mediation the best.

If you have done her wrong, just admit it and pay penance.

money you can always earn back,

Sit down with her and seek a common ground.

Agree on what is best for your children.

It's not about how or where the lawyer's office is or looks like, he is a lawyer at home, at work, in the bar, taking a dump or in his pj's. He can be in a crappy building but very experienced in a particular area of law. Fact is, he has made quite a few representations on behalf of your ex, I assume that you are not challenging any of those applications ?

Unless you are playing the "poor dad/willing husband nice guy" tactic. And you want to just get it over and done with. Or u just dont have much assets to really divide over for.

If you are not well versed in family law, the procedures of that area of law and the courts, I don't think you really appreciate the consequences of representing yourself. U can represent yourself no doubt, its going to be a pretty one-sided battle. Unless you got some serious mojo up your sleeve that we don't know about.

Thanks for this. Yup I wanted to end the things faster. And you are right, we did not have much to fight for, except for an HDB flat, for which I was not claiming the ownership, and was willing to transfer. (However she went for appeal with hues and cries over the money she has been asked to pay, despite the court had split the notional profit as 70% for my ex).

Reason, why I didn't want to hire a lawyer is, I know my case very well, and my sincererity would be superior to a lawyer. All the things that I need to know were available from the statutes which are online, and from the rules and regulations, and practice guidances of courts which are again online. Appeals' annual reports available in library was also useful for the practicality and examples. I did pretty well without a lawyer.

For those who wants to know why I want to know how she much spends: I am weighing her weakness and power, as she may make my rest of my life misreable by repeated claims and complaints under women's charter. (This is another reason why I did not want to hire a lawyer, as I need to learn this game to face all along my life, else I will be made bankrupt through lawyer fees.) If it turns out that she pays lot, I can use her that stress, to buy her attention and make her listen to the issues more carefully.

Yes, I agree. But what can I do with a women who don't even talk to resolve the issues, and simply resrt to sending summons through courts and notices through lawyer.

I think you are missing the whole picture here..

A woman will have her claws out as long as she feels threatened.

Your game of manipulation will not work on an angry woman.

After all her pleas had fell on deaf ears during the marriage... of cors she has to resort to hiring a lawyer because that's how she can finally have YOUR attention.

Since there's no two-way communication during the marriage... she is now talking to you through her lawyer.

So, it doesn't matter how much she has to pay.. as long as she is getting through to you via a third party.. it's worth the lawyer fees.

From your posts it is quite obvious ,you think you are a very smart guy...however you seem to have no idea ..why your life is falling apart today....

Woman's Charter is a bitch eh. Man I feel you. Legal fee's can make you go broke, and looks like you have carefully weighted your options in representing yourself, I think. Damn lawyers.. :P You know, your nice guy method may even work in your favour. Hope you really know what u are doing.

Nope, this is not the issue in my case atleast. Now, I am trying to get my own life, and will not be of any problem to her, and will simply be paying the child maintenance as asked by the court. That is not she wants. She is already angry about certain good things that happened to me after she divorce.
