I want to be
able to live life
There are four
things I wish for when I am 34. Firstly, to live in a Singapore
where success is not just academically-centred.
In schools today, we are told that outstanding qualifications
equate to a bright future. And, so, many of us strive to attain
that A* - only to be told afterwards that we "still have areas to
work on". There is never a point of satisfaction. So we try to
achieve what is humanly impossible by sacrificing our rest, quality
family time and social life.
I remember when I cried while revising for my continual
assessments, just because I couldn't seem to stuff everything into
the minute brain of mine. I remember when I topped the class in a
few subjects but could not feel even a hint of joy. I remember when
my friend said: "Study and work so much then, in the end, we will
die. What's the point?"
In 20 years' time, I want my children to be able to balance school
and play. I want them to have a childhood worth remembering. I want
them to learn from school values that will help them tackle
obstacles in life. I do not want yet another generation of living
zombies.
I wish for life, overall, to become less fast-paced. At 6.30am on
the MRT, I see people looking glum and stressed, instead of excited
over a brand new day. For many, life in Singapore seems to have
become more like a fight for survival. Even the elderly are doing
physically-demanding jobs like cleaning.
In 20 years' time when I am into my career, I want a job that
allows me to spend quality time with my family. I want to be free
from overwhelming financial worries.
I want to work in an environment where everyone is beaming with
fulfilment. I want to be able to sit back and enjoy the beauty of
life. I don't just want to exist; I want to live.
