No one saw us, fingers entwined,
as we steer our raft into dreaming.
The blue is a cloak, sheltering us.
We count the stars, bright like our eyes.
This is summer, and summer is drunk
with wanting, agile as a happy fish.
Before us, the whole of the world is
perched on a golden branch, patient.
It is on a timeless quest, cresting
on the waves that sail our fates ashore
a sprawling beach, the pearl-wet
faceted in the dawning sun.
Come autumn, our lids, hazed from sleep,
count idle leaves, red and gold,
falling to home on a banner of winds
to the hearts that have creepered
around our red-brick hearth,
the fires swirling and churning to rest.
When the years turn full and wintry
I nuzzle your grizzled b.reast
and breathe the summer of eternity.
