More comments are good but I would like to stress three things

1) This got to be a two-ways process. If you expect other to comment on your poems, you need to comment on the poems posted here too.

2) Do understand that comments are not meant to be personal so avoid personal attacks. We all have different ideas on what constituted a good poem so if you dont agree with the comments, move on. Dont hang on to them.

3) We all have different expectations. For example I expect dsnake1s poems to be of certain quality. Thus I may provide more details or sound harsher when I am commenting on his poems. I think most of the moderators in DPS (S) work this way.

As for attracting those who are not interested in poetry to come and try appreciating it. Although this is not going to be easy but I think one way is via poetry reading session. Very Happy

That is why I am glad we have poetry writing competition here in DPS (S). When I first started it back in 2004 I have no idea how far it will go.

I dont expect everyone to agree to this suggestion cos we generally have reservations about expressing ourselves in public. I know i do.
But i personally think that to be good at poetry, we need to train ourselves to read a poem properly as well as to listen to how others read. At the last reading, I noticed there are good and confident readers and there are others that are learning to be good and confident. To me the important thing is the learning. Cos we never know if we can be good unless we try.

Sorry if this sounds preachy. But they're my honest thoughts.

What I am more concern with is regarding live feedbacks. IMO, it is going to be quite meaningless since most of us will only give simple one sentence feedback rather than in-depth analysis.

Will not be very helpful to the reading poet. Wink

Unless you have been at poetry readings for a long time and you have a literary position in regards to poetry writing, I think it's a bit much to expect indepth analysis to be given on the spot.

When people give indepth analysis during reading session, it's only because it's been prepared before hand. People who are going to read submit their poems to the circle in advance (like a week or two). On the day of the reading, after the poet reads, the people give all their prepared comments verbally. (Of course, they would also comment on what they think of the reading and how it compares to how they think they themselves would have read it). It's not reality to expect analysis on-the-fly. Cool

True, it's more realistic to have some time to prepare first Smile Anyway, i was thinking it could be more of like the Poetry Slam concept, where it's more impromptu you know? Dont need to be so serious, just say "I like!" or "don't like!". No need to go in-depth explanations unless you want to. Just keep it fun and wacky if possible so everyone enjoys it instead of it being so stressful

hrm. what i'll be stating is what i want from myself, as a member of DPS (S), and i think a few others would share my sentiments.

i hope to be more open and less guarded in giving opinions and in posting my poems here. a lot of times, i am afraid to go into the details i see in each poem posted here. because as much as i believe in what i think, i also acknowledge the fact that poetry is subjective. that is what holds me back from saying more.

so in time to come i hope (for myself and for everyone who feels like i do) to be able to be specific (when we know we are able to) in the comments given. eg. if i don't like a certain poem, state why i don't like it, instead of just "oh. i didn't really like this".

for now, i am still trying to muster up enough courage to post a poem here. i chickened out once. Embarassed
