One Last Smile
He was laughing and smiling at his wifes funeral,
There was no sign of sadness in his wrinkled face.
His friends looked at him and wonder why,
And shake their heads in utter disgrace.
His wifes family members looked at him in disgust,
His actions are not appropriate for an event as such.
How heartless and ungrateful can a man be!
To shed not a single tear for a wife that loves him much.
When the funeral was over, and all the guests had gone,
He went home alone; it was already late in the night.
He locked himself in his room, with the photo of his wife,
Calling out her name, he began to cry.
Oh how hard Ive tried, to hold back these tears.
Every smile was like a needle struck into my heart.
But I fought on and fulfill your last request,
Throughout the funeral I have not shed a single tear.
But I am so sorry, so sorry my dear,
For I can no longer hold back these tears.
With that he released an anguish cry.
A cry so beast-like that it will strike you with fear.
With trembling voice he cried out her name,
Again and again, it echoed through the night.
And occasionally he would hummed their favourite song,
For the pain he felt, no word could describe.
Like a broken man, he had no strength left,
His spirit gone, his mind in total blank.
There is nothing left, except a bottomless pit,
The memories of his love and her photo in his hand.
He was there beside his dying wife that afternoon,
Holding her hand praying for her to stay.
There are so much more he wanted to do with her,
But no miracle came, and with dying breath she said.
You are always so serious, and you hardly smile.
Please try to smile more often when I am no longer around.
I have never requested anything in our marriage of
thirty-five,
But now I have one last wish which I hope you can comply
It is going to be difficult, and you might think me cruel.
I want you to smile at my funeral, I dont want to see you
cry.
Think of me as going to a better place,
Please my dear, will you smile for me one last time?
So he kept his promise and was branded a jerk,
Though he was at the edge of breaking from time to time,
He clenched his teeth and fought on and on,
And nobody noticed the sadness in his eyes.
