SINGAPORE : Thousands of callers pledged donations to the Singapore Cancer Society through a special charity show on Sunday.

The Cancer Society is the first voluntary welfare organisation to hold a television fundraiser since the National Kidney Foundation episode.

The extravaganza on MediaCorp's Channel 8 featured several stars, including Project Superstar winner Chen Weilian.

But the highlight was Dr William Tan's world-record feat of completing 48 hours on wheels.

The response by viewers was music to the ears of many in the charity scene.

This was seen as a test of public sentiment, especially with concerns about the impact of a post-NKF backlash against charities. - CNA /ct
