2046 is too late
LONDON - Hong Kong film-maker Wong Kar Wai's new movie, 2046, is
officially not finished yet.
It will not be closing the Edinburgh International Film Festival as
planned, organisers said.
A version was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in France in
May, but Edinburgh organisers said the final print would not be
ready by closing night on Aug 29.
'Ultimately, this is just one of the pitfalls of working with
eccentric artistic geniuses,' said festival artistic director Shane
Danielsen.
Mr Hamish McAlpine, managing director of distributor Tartan Films,
told the Guardian: 'Having seen a recent edit in Hong Kong, the
film is getting better day by day.'
Wong, acclaimed for such films as In The Mood For Love, is
notorious for working without scripts, then editing until the last
possible moment.
2046, described as a sci-fi follow-up to In The Mood For Love,
stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai (inset), Faye Wong, Zhang Ziyi and Takuya
Kimura.
Rescheduled to close the festival is Untold Scandal, a South Korean
remake of Dangerous Liaisons by director E.J. Yong and starring Bae
Yong Jun. -- AFP
