Whats the basic requirement for being IT Help Desk?

Just my view :

I need someone which have interest in IT , know Basic Excel, Words. Basic Windows 95,98,2000,XP installation, configurations, trouble shooting , install driver, update patches.

Quali not important, self indepantant, know they different between user and IT help desk and not behave like user.

i would say to be a IT help desk, you have to be proficient in the area that you are expected to provide support in. so it all depends on the environment that your users are in. which OS they using, which applications they used etc..

and basically IT Help Desk Support r required to know all about MS products..

To sum up:
1) OS setup/configuration knowledge(Depending on ur users' environment)
2) Domain knowledge(Business domain knowledge etc)
3) MS Products(Office etc)
4) a bit of network knowledge
5) printer setup/configuration knowledge
6) good personality(being polite is a must)
7) patient person
Cool know how to explain things in layman terms to a normal user
9) know when to laugh(after putting down the phone)
10) MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: experience -> someone who knows everything inside out is the best.
