Monthly Latin Novus Ordo Mass at OLPS

catinthehat SG

From February, there will be a monthly Mass in Latin (Novus Ordo) on 2nd Sundays at 3.30pm. Venue will be Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. Hence, the first Mass will be on 10 Feb Sunday.

Translations in English and Mandarin provided!

Volunteers in singing still welcome - PM me if you still want to audition!

How to get there:
Kembangan MRT and walk uphill along Sims Avenue East. Or hop on any bus and get off at next bus stop.
Bedok MRT/Interchange and just hop on any bus heading towards Changi Road/Geylang Road. Get off when the MRT line disappears into the ground. [/b]

Hmm...I wonder which setting they'll be using for each part of Mass. I think I still remember the Kyrie, Veni Creator Spiritus and Agnus Dei I sang in 2001.

Sorry if I seem to be spouting nonsense - I'm exhausted.

catinthehat SG

Oh, I think that will be decided after the Choir is formed. They need to see what kind of singers they have, then decide what music to do accordingly.

Here is the mention in the parish bulletin:

A mixed Gregorian Chant Choir is being organised to sing at future Masses celebrated in Latin. If you are interested, please contact Secretariat at 62419565 and give us your email and phone no. by 24 January 2008. Auditions will be conducted on Sunday, 27 January afternoon. Previous experience with Gregorian Chant not required. All are welcome to join this Choir (both ladies and gentlemen).

So there will be auditions, and I'm told they will begin on 27 Jan at 2 pm. But don't be afraid - auditions are for the choir master to get to know each of his singers better.

I want to complain. How come your schola do not accept ladies now?

catinthehat SG

If there are enough women who show interest, we'll start a women's schola. Seriously. We have one lady who is interested, but one-gal-show is not enough. So hopefully we'll meet more interested ladies.

Icemoon SG

oh, a schola is not a mixed choir?

What's the fundamental diff between the schola and a normal church choir?

catinthehat SG

okay "schola cantorum" means "school of singing" in Latin. Usually this term is applied to people singing Gregorian chant, and is shortened to "schola". Any church choir can call themselves "schola cantorum", and if their singing sucks, then they really need to attend a "schola musicae" (music school) first ... hee hee

Now, there is nothing to stop people from organizing a mixed schola.

Its just that the singers here think that a separate women's and men's schola will be better. A schola of mixed voices has different musical issues to tackle and it can get quite difficult. So we prefer to just keep things simple.

Even in the mens' schola, there are tenors and there are basses. The tenors always complain the key is set too low, the basses always complain about the high notes (in Gregorian chant, the schola sets the key of the music).

wah, response at auditions was good today! Many people had to wait for more than an hour!

ObiterDicta SG

You complain simi? You also not a member of the Church.

Choir rehearsals have begun! and I'm told that we have quite a fair bit of people who have music as a serious hobby. So lai ah lai ah, come and audition!
