I’ve seen the late John Paul II about 3 years ago, during a
holiday in Rome. I happened to be visiting the Vatican museum on a
Sunday morning, and so I went with the crowd at St. Peter’s square
to watch him deliver his weekly sermon from his balcony. That was
the only time I’ve seen a Pope, and that was from a distance of 70
metres or something. But the atmosphere was great alright, people
cheered when he appeared on the balcony. It really showed the power
of one man to move thousands of people just by his presence.
