i guess it means that they're catholics
like crossing your fingers you do that to get luck, sth along this line

Honeybunz SG

sign of a cross...

"In the name of the Father (touch forehead)
and of the Son (touch chest)
and of the Holy Spirit (touch left shoulder and then right). "

It could be just a simple and quick prayer to give strength or something.
Can be anything. And yes. It's usually practised by Catholics.

SingaporeMacross SG

The sign of the cross is to invoke God’s protection.

mochou SG

you forgot the last word. "Amen"

R3SsH|n SG

so if non-catholics do it…will it be any offence or mockery?

SingaporeMacross SG

Depends on their intention.

Beats me why any one wants to do it, when some Catholics are ashamed to.

ObiterDicta SG

We believe in God's Providence, not luck.

and why would that be so?

ObiterDicta SG

Not all Catholics are thrilled about their faith, and there are also many who do not want to be associated with a religion described as being 'medieval, oppressive', and 'fit for only peasants and the uneducated'.
