yeap. restore should do the trick. i am just wondering which programs use the preferences.dll file. maybe the problem is confined within a software incompatibility namely musicmatch jukebox (get an update copy from their website). do disable any folder/file hiding software if you have one. there can be a lot of other reasons. i will stop here for now. hmm.. does the windows still work under safe mode (F Cool ?

do you have any idea what does the mim.exe file do? does it belong to the jukebox? suspect the dll file error was caused by the jukebox. maybe you want to uninstall and see how..

Using another system to boot up, using current hdd as slave drive, transfer necessary files, re-partition, format, re-install.

urgh.. a bit extreme.. recommended only as a last resort. so f8 doesn't work? maybe it is a sign of harddisk failure.. how old is it?

HDD failure for winxp will prompt a scandisk. It's likely windows was corrupted..

quite unlikely.. the problem is with the dll.. need to find out which program uses that file. but first you need to up the os. after which you may uninstall the conflicting software or simply remove the link from the registry. it all depends on the nature of the problem.

When winxp starts up, it'll randomly check the disk integrity.

Unlikely to be a bad sector, or corrupted fat. It's very likely to be corrupted dll only.

And for further information how that can occur, if bismarck's winxp was original, he could call ms hotline for details. They are the professionals, I am just some wannabe.

hmm.. just did a little checking up. that files belong to windows xp. you can try copying it into the system and see how.

it shld be due to musicmatch ....and while all the 3-400 popups are ard..cpu usage ard 100% constant.
then i frequently get emails frm mail servers replying back to me abt a virus i 'sent'
