SINGAPORE : Singapore's Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng has
urged the Police Force to move in tandem with changes facing the
country.
Speaking to police officers at the annual Police Day Parade, he
says as society matures and becomes more sophisticated, the police
can expect more calls for greater liberalisation of rules.
So it is important that the Home Affairs Ministry does not reject
initiatives outright before giving them due consideration and
thought.
On its part, Mr Wong says the Police have responded to calls for
greater liberalisation, like extending operating hours of
designated nightspots and relaxing permit rules for indoor public
talks.
Mr Wong also noted that Singapore now ranks one of the safest
cities and is recognised as one of the best places to do business,
but the terrorist menace remains.
Hence, the need for the police to also work with international
partners to combat the threat in the region.
This is the last parade to be held at the Police Academy at Thomson
Road.
By the middle of next year, Home Team agencies will train under one
roof at the new Home Team Academy at Chua Chu Kang. - CNA /ct
