SINGAPORE : One of Singapore's oldest goldsmith Poh Kong Chye
was taken into receivership last month, after owing millions to
banks and suppliers.
But it relived its good old days again, when crowds turned up at
its North Bridge Road branch to pick up bargains at its clearance
sale.
The pushing and shoving, though, caused some unpleasant scenes
between customers.
It is the closing sale at Poh Kong Chye and it is drawing crowds
that it has not seen for years.
Customers flocked in as soon as the doors were opened.
Prices of diamonds, precious stones, pearls and gold items were
slashed by as much as 80 percent.
916 gold pieces were going for only S$23 per gramme, much cheaper
than the original price of S$26.50.
One customer said, "I've been here since 10 this morning. My
daughter bought me some earrings and chains and spent S$6,000 for
the New Year."
Another commented, "It's very average, there are too many people
and the designs are not very nice."
A third commented, "Too full, too many people."
The sale started last week and at least a quarter of the items on
display are sold each day.
The stock clearance sale will be on till next month. - CNA
