Copying and chanting sutra is not as good as understanding the sutra. Buddha taught the sutra for the purpose of enlightening sentient beings... if we fail to understand and benefit from his teachings then the teaching has lost its purpose.

Understanding the sutra is not as good as practicing to realize the sutra... and practicing is not as good as realizing the essence... realizing the essence is not as good as actualizing the wisdom. Of course, one should first understand, then practice, then realize, and then actualize it in our life.

All of Buddha's teachings have the soteriological value of allowing us to understanding suffering and liberate us from suffering. That is the purpose of studying and practicing the Dharma.

it'll just accumulate merits for a better 'future' for u. full realisation is still needed to end suffering.

buddha mentioned abt 84000 ways of cultivation, if u r able to put yr total mind n soul into copying of sutra it basically will have the same effect as meditating which is to train yr focusing n tame yr mind fr wandering,, theres no fix ways of training, if copying of sutra works on u n it shows result…y not. but i think u can improvise a bit e.g. typing or writing sutra with yr pc so as to save resources n less the worries of disposing it…as for where to dispose yr current sutra the only way ive heard of is to find a very remote area n bury them…same for any buddhist related stuffs like amulet etc.

it does help on the vexation/affliction aspect more than it does on the right view/wisdom aspect.
