COLOMBO - A Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka died in hospital on Tuesday after poisoning himself with insecticide following a 20-year jail sentence for raping a 13-year-old girl, police said.

The 30-year-old monk drank the insecticide Monday right after High Court Judge Rohini Perera ordered him to pay a 10,000-rupee (100-dollar) fine and sentenced him to 20 years in prison, a police official said.

The court had been told that the monk assaulted the girl in 2001. She attended a Sunday school run by the monk�s temple.

The judge said the 20-year sentence was intended as a deterrent to �protect Buddhism� in the Buddhist-majority island nation.

National Hospital Director Hector Weerasinghe said the priest was treated in the intensive care unit and died Tuesday.

The court sentence was handed down the same day that police formally charged another Buddhist monk of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl.

The 65-year-old monk was arrested in the southern district of Matara, police said.

Aiya...at least the karma catches up with the naughty monk and they get their proper sentence. Another sentence is in the hell down there.

This is transparent and made public compared to Catholic and Christanity system.

Many peodophile catholic priests were shielded for decades by the church clergy themselves. Worse right ? No justice ever being meted out and the catholic priests can run scot free of their crimes.
