teacher who tirelessly led retreats for monks and laymen alike.

I recommend 静坐修道与长生不老 for his perspective on energy work and
如何修证佛法 for in depth explanation on Buddhist practice. His later
works are transcription of his retreat talk and it is incredible to
realize how in depth his talk is without any preparation, a sign of
enlightened teacher.
