6th Patriarch Hui Neng gave a different meaning to the Taking
Refuge of Triple Gems. He advocated the Taking Refuge of Triple
Gems of your True nature. 皈依觉正净.
唐朝时代的禅宗六祖惠能大师唯恐后人对‘皈依三宝’的误解，特别在坛经讲解并传授三皈依，他不是讲归依佛、归依法、归依僧，而是要我们归依‘自性三宝’，盖以‘佛’者，觉也；‘法’者，正也；‘僧’者，净也。六祖对归依自性三宝的解释为：‘自心归依“觉”，邪迷不生，少欲知足，能离财色，名两足尊’；‘自心归依“正”，念念无邪见，以无邪见故，即无人我贡高、贪爱执著，名离欲尊’；‘自心归依“净”，一切尘劳爱欲境界，自性皆不染著，名众中尊’。由上可知，六祖所传授的皈依，乃是要我们皈依‘自心三宝’，亦即‘内调心性，外敬他人’，‘常见自己过，不说他人好恶’，‘常须下心，普行恭敬’，方名真正的‘自皈依’也。

I return and rely, returning from delusions and
relying upon Awareness and Understanding.

the Dharma
I return and rely, returning from erroneous views
and relying upon Proper Views and Understanding.
To
the Sangha
I return and rely, returning from pollutions and
disharmony and relying upon Purity of Mind and the Six Principles
of Living in Harmony.
