Just want to share with you what I saw yesterday at this Sheng Shiong supermarket at bedok.
They have this live seafood department showing live fishes, prawns and crabs for sale. In order to attract customers and to show that their fishes is very fresh, they go and get a fish, still live one, chop off the tail and put it in front to show to the crowd.
The scene is super gross...the fish with its tail gone, struggling desperately for oxygen, with the blood slowly coming out of the vein.
I really pity the pain that the fish has to go through, furthermore considering the big size, the physical pain will be more.
Can't the seller give it a quick death instead of chopping it into halves and slowly let it suffocate? Do they think that the fish doesn't feel pain at all?
In fact, there are more tailless live fish in the store waiting for the potential buyer.

There was nothing I can do that time other than chanting mantra silently hoping these helpless beings can quickly die and liberate from the suffering.
I really can't believe such a barbaric act still happen in our society.

Let's hope we can one day become more capable to prevent this from happening again.

Meh fish get eaten all the time by other sea creatures. It’s no more painful than getting chewed to death by razor sharp teeth or swallowed whole to be digested alive.

We do not need to eat the fish to stay alive. Vegetables are enough. Besides, as thinking humans, it takes us a concious intention to kill the fish this way.

Predators in the sea are different. It's their instint to kill. They have to kill and eat to survive. They have no choice. We have.

Sometime when I see such things, I feel like buying all the animals (be it fish, crab, frogs or whatever) to prevent them from being tortured and killed. But then I don't know how to handle them after buying them...

Yes, you can buy all of the creatures and set them free, but how many can you save?

A grandfather and his grand-daughter was walking down the beach one evening. The grand-daughter watched as the grandfather picked up the starfish that has been washed up to the shore and throw them back into the sea to prevent them from drying out.

Finally, the grand-daughter asked: 'The beach is huge, there's so many starfish, you can't save all. What impact can you make?'

Calmly, the grandfather picked up one more starfish, throw it into the sea, and said: 'it makes a difference to that one'.

Karma is not about fatalism. If I can save the fish, why not see it as it's their karma to be saved by me? But if I can't save the fish, well then, I can't save them.

There are always other torturing method which is more cruel than this.
But that doesn't mean chopping them alive into half is right.
You know what I am saying?
The way japanese killed the chinese civilians in Nanjing massacre is very cruel, but that doesn't make the terrorist right in killing with bomb blast.

Definitely you haven seen how pple kill frogs for their legs . That scene is much more gory and gross then the fish kana chopped off its tail . And also the video where pple pay the seller to remove the fur from the dogs still alive to sell to them .

I guess the most gory thing I've ever seen is in a movie which depicts the kind of 'medical experiment' that the Japanese does on the chinese during WWII.

For one, the Japanese would put the Chinese into low-pressure chambers such that those people's innard will be expelled from their bowel. Or how about removing a pumping heart from a young boy. Freezing a person's hand under way below minus degree and then smashing it with a ruler. How about putting a dozen Chinese into minefields to test the effect of those mines (note: not all the people will die from the mines. Some get their limps blown off or their eyes forced out from the socket by the impact)

The thing we call 'humanity' and 'civilisation' is more than capable of much cruelity and inhumanity than we living in a sheltered Singapore can imagine. But that does not justify cruelity to animals, however small scaled it may be compared to other actions.

Let's hope we can one day become more capable to prevent this from happening again.

I've been thinking...how can we achieve this? Preventing these kind of inhumane actions?

its not that i do not eat fish or meat.. but imagine there is a hook to hook you on your mouth, and pull the way out of you? it must be very painful...

maybe we shld deal those livestock in a more humane way.
try to inflict less pain as possible when we are slaughtering them. Let the journey be less torturing for them.

All living thing's instinct is to survive. For human, to survive is through money and power. Doing things to earn money and power is survival. Making sure fishes are sold is making money and that's survival.

Cruelty is the side effect.

You brought up a very interesting point. Soldiers in the japanese imperial army were buddhist. But however, they resorted to such grusome acts to their fellow human beings on the orders of their so-called god. And they call themselves buddhists? While most of the IJA were never prosecuted for war-crimes as well as their emperor, i can only hope their karma does justice.

i think their version of the religion is different to ours. what i understand is their religion is one call SOKA. they claimed that is a part of buddhism. but from what i went to find out, they focus more on self achievement, instead of seeing as one community. means they chant to the benefit to add value to their own individual. not to the others. again, pls correct if i not wrong in any way. Neutral

Yes you are partly right. But they chant and do good things, clear their minds of ill wants....

All religion is good by nature, that's only way to convince and control human. It's human who uses religion to do bad things.

Human has this perfect brain to distort facts and then starts believing it...

Beyond Religion SG

Actually the dominant religion during WW2 in Japan is Shinto, not Buddhism. Although exceeding rare, there are cases of Japanese soldiers showing compassion. I remember reading a case in a Singapore Buddhist Lodge (SBL) year book that documents a Buddhist Japanese officer responding to the pleas of SBL and secretly issued food ration passes to the lodge.
