Personally I think the monks in Myammar are indeed practising bodhisattvas. Despite the terror and fear for their government, however for the benefit of the people, they willing protested along with them, in hope that their voice would be heard and accedded.

How many people really dare to stand up to their belief till the end?

And the monks didn't start the violence mah.

But Buddhism had abused the word of expedient means and degraded many other faith in subtle ways.

As an organised faith, it is not as perfect as you think so.

I mean historically, it seems to me that Buddhism is the only organised religion that has not engaged in religious wars. I cldnt think of other examples at the moment.

Of course it is not perfect, never said it was.

update: i think jainism cld be another religion that doesnt have a violent history of engaging in religious fighting. In some ways the pacifist and non-violent teachings are being shared with Buddhism.

Who says so?
Buddhist monks had participated in battles towards the end of the Yuan dynasty in China. The common Chinese folk then were heavily taxed to support the Mongol invasions in Europe and Africa so much that survival became a problem. So in the end, the monks too joined the rebellions and chased away the Mongol tyrants.

I am talking about religious fighting and wars, not wars for political purposes.

Of course if you want to talk about that, I think there are also Buddhist rulers who have fought wars before.

At the end of the Yuan dynasty, the sangha in China on the whole committed itself to battle an oppressive government with violence. That was a war against injustice. There was no recourse as doing nothing would leave the common people to fight alone. So we are not talking about Buddhist rulers having wars but whole groups of monks and nuns actively participating in war for the sake of the common people.

Agreed. With any form of religious organisation, the objectives are no longer altruistic. Politics, personal goals, leadership josting, size of membership, money, positions, recognition - all these human failings are so apparent that unless you are blind then you cannot see!
What I said here is going to attract denial - but that is exactly what it is: refusal to see the truth!
