Actually pure land must not only be good... it must be pure..
only a mind that is clean of all defilements, that one is
considered a pure mind. A pure land is generally a liberated and
enlightened society, though it is true that the people at that time
are very virtuous people (they are at the peak cycle of the human
degeneration and regeneration cycles.. in which now we are
currently at the degenerated phase). In the times of Maitreya
Bodhisattva, the population is many many many times bigger than our
current population... it is said in the sutras dunnu how many
billions of people, and each city is extremely near the next city.
And Maitreya Buddha at that time has a sangha of 9+ billion
monks.
In each dharma discourse by the Maitreya Buddha, 9+ billions of
listeners attain enlightenment and liberation.. and there are quite
a number of these discourses.. so in the end about 40 billion
people attain arhat. You can imagine the number of population
then.... Another thing is at that time, our planet earth is in
communication with 3 other planets from other solar systems.. and
we are under one rule of the universal monarch or wheel turning
king.. who travels in a golden flying vehicle that can reach the
other planet in 1 day's time.
Oh yes.. they just found out recently a planet that is earth-like
with an atmosphere of 0-40 degrees in which the water will be
liquid! Could be one of the planets... who knows.
