in other word, one must be steady in the mind, we
called it in samathi, fearless in a way when reciting Buddha's or
Bodhisattva's name, mantra(om mani padme hum) or
sutra.
they will be more afraid of u than u to them 
that say ghosts/spirits are 70% more afraid then human while we
human are 30% afraid of them.
lastly, one also have to transfer one's merit (ie huai1 xiang1) to
them. May they be free from suffering, take refuge in Triple Gem
and quickly be liberated into the higher realms. use compassion,
loving kindness to touch them.
