Now that's real tough because I consider Evangelion a huge
success. It caused me 98 minutes worth of misery on a Saturday
night. 
Mmm u got to watch the anime to understand. It may seems like a
normal mech anime that involve in fighting, babes that wear less,
and some twisted plot to spice up the stories. However what this
anime also offer is to look into another side of human's
feeling...feeling that u r unwanted, alone, depressed, rejected,
confused, fustration....etc. Why is it so popular is mainly because
this anime is not like those mainstream one that offers violence
and glory, but rather have a indept of human's feeling throught the
character development. Its popular maybe due to the fact of its
unusal presentation consider the fact this was produce at 1995 and
many might felt related to ppl in the series like shinji or
aska.
I cant help feeling sad when watch end of envangelion and though
of how the ugly side of human was displayed in this anime. Alot of
confused stuff but to me seems like a anime that needs deep
thinking to understand this. But as for the ending, its up to
u to interpert. And yes i was quite disappointed that the anime was
ended in this way, but well, at least its kind of different.
