In 2009, Chinese Lunar New Year – or the first day of the first lunar moon – falls on the Gregorian calendar date of 26th Jan 2009. Chinese all over the world will celebrate the new Chinese Year of the Earth Ox (Heavenly Stem of Ji Chou).

The current year of the Earth Rat will be replaced by the Earth Ox which is the next stem branch combo in the Sixty ‘Jia Zi’ astrological cycles.

The New Year brings a change in the ‘qi’ that affects us. Knowing what they are allows us to make better use of our home and office premise and maximize our Feng Shui luck in 2009.

In 2009 the inauspicious energies of Five Yellow affects the north sector. Five Yellow is associated with major illness and calamities and it is wise to stay away from the north sector if you can. If your bedroom, study or office is in the north sector, you should move – if you can - to another sector (preferably south east which I will explain in a while). If you main door is located in the north sector and/or facing north, you should use another entrance if available.

If you cannot relocate to another room or you do not have an alternative entrance then you should place metal items such as wind chimes or a copper vases or metal coins in the north sector to counter the effect of Five Yellow. Try your best not to disturb the area and remove any activators such as moving water feature, that could fan the energy and make the situation worse.

In 2009, Three Killings – or San Sha - resides in the east. Three Killing comprises of the triple combo of year, disaster and robbery sha. In addition to obstacles, Three Killing is also associated with accidents and losses (financial included).

To counter the triple effects of Three Killings, you should place a plant together with water and metal in the east sector e.g. money plant in water placed on top of metal coins. If you have space outside the house in the east sector you can also plant a tree to soften the effect of Three Killings.

And of course no major renovation works in these sectors – especially those involving ground breaking - in the north and east for the whole of 2009.

Tai Sui is in NE1 – the 15 degree part of NE that is adjacent or closest to the north sector. The opposite of Tai Sui is Sui Po – or Year Breaker at SW1. If you house is facing Tai Sui (NE1), you should refrain from carrying out any renovation at all in 2008! Also place a metal item in the NE1 sector to block the effect of Tai Sui.

Now that you have taken care of the highly dangerous sector, let’s look at what we can do to improve the other areas. This year the better sectors are the south east (8) and center (9). The energy in the south east is associated with career growth and business success while that in the center (9) is associated with fame, position and happy events.

You can improve your luck by using these sectors and by energizing the south east especially with an activator such as an indoor fountain or aquarium.

The north-west is associated with promotion and growth (1) and it is good to make use of this sector.

Looking for romance or need a boost with your education? Make use of the south (4) sector as the energy of romance and learning resides there this year. Place a plant in this sector.

The south west is inhabited by the authority (6) star in 2009. This is a good sector for those holding high position that requires authority e.g. CEO, politician or military. Place earthen ware objects to enhance the sector.

In addition to north which is a very bad sector in 2009, you should also take care of the other sectors that are inhabited with inauspicious energies. There are the east, west and north-east sectors. The robbery star (7) resides in the east. To diminish its effect, place a bucket of still water in the east.

The argument star (3) resides in the north east sector. Place a lamp or many lamps in this area.

The illness star (2) occupies the west. Since the west is associated with the youngest daughter, mouth and lungs, young girls with mouth and respiratory problems should take extra care. Place a metal Wu Lu (close lid) here to reduce the effect of this star. Those who are recuperating from an illness should also avoid this sector.

Then next thing you should know is 天干 or commonly known as Heavenly Stems. The origins of the heavenly stems is :

The Shang people believed that there were ten suns, each of which appeared in order in a ten-day cycle (旬; xún). The Heavenly Stems were the names of the ten suns, and were found in the given names of the kings of the Shang. Some historians think the ruling class of the Shang had ten clans, but it is not clear whether their society reflected the myth or vice versa. The associations with Yin-Yang and the Five Elements developed later, after the collapse of the Shang Dynasty.

SevenEleven SG

The Earthly Branches (地支) provide one Chinese system for reckoning time.

This system was built from observations of the orbit of Jupiter. Chinese astronomers divided the celestial circle into 12 sections to follow the orbit of 歳星 Suìxīng (Jupiter, the Year Star). Astronomers rounded the orbit of Suixing to 12 years (from 11.86).

In correlative thinking, the twelve years of the Jupiter cycle also identify the twelve months of the year, twelve animals (mnemonics for the system), directions, seasons, months, and Chinese hour in the form of double-hours. When a Branch is used for a double hour, the listed periods are meant. When used for an exact time of a day, it is the center of the period. For instance, 午 (the Horse) means noon or a period from 11am to 1pm. (The jie qi system provided single hours and 15-degree arcs in time and space.)

Chinese seasons are based on observations of the sun and stars, not the weather. Many Chinese calendrical systems have started the new year on the first new moon after the winter solstice.

SevenEleven SG

Heavenly Stems and the Earthly Branch, together, they form the 60 years cycle calendar. .

For example, the year 2000 was the 17th year of the sexagenary cycle, a gēng-chén year (庚辰年), a year of the Yang Metal Dragon. Therefore, 2006 is the 23rd year of the sexagenary cycle, called a bǐng-xū year (丙戌年), a year of the Yang Fire Dog; 2007 a year of the Yin Fire Pig.

The naming of the months and days is not common now, although they are shown on Chinese calendars and almanacs.

SevenEleven SG

With this, we come to a close of the basic theory of fengshui. Just to recap hat we have went thru

A little about the origins of fengshui. When early man were hunters, they lived on the tree top to keep out wild animals. However, trees could not keep out the wind, the rain and the seasonal weathers. So man began to search for alternatives such as caves. When man became "the gathers", they began to notice the seasonal and nature changes. So they had learnt to select their abode based on these.

Probably the first historical record of fengshui started with the man called FuXi. He was the one who discovered the dragon horse marking. This formed the Early Heaven Trigram 先天八卦. During the Hsia dynasty, emperor Hsia Yu discovered the tortoise marking and this formed the Later Heaven Trigram　后天八卦.

During the Shang dynasty, abode were selected base on the landform selection 择地. This was probably the begining of 阴宅 (House for the Dead). During the Zhou dynasty, where the art of oracles 易经　flourished, abode were selected based on oracles 卜宅.

Subsequently, during the warring period, 阴宅 (House for the Dead) began to decline as people started to move about to escape the war. It was during this period a very famous architect (Lu Pan）鲁班 was borned.　During that time, houses were made from wood and he was said to be the father of carpentary and could make a house without even a single nail. Perhap he was also remembered to be the founder of the Lu Pan ruler 鲁班尺

SevenEleven SG

During the Han dynasty, the method of selection was based on the surname that rhymes with the 5 elements. It was said that “宅相”，主要是以主人的姓，看姓的发音，究竟是属“宫、商、角、徵、羽”五行五音中的哪一个，然后来配合所居房宅来论其吉凶。这种方法是以阴阳五行生克的观念而衍生的.

During the Tang dynasty, there was an imperial scholar name 杨筠松 (yang jun song) who got hold of the books 卧龙经 (hidden dragon book) from the western region from the imperial court. He took the books and went hiding into the Kun Lun Mountain to study. Finally with the skill, he came down from the mountain and went about helping the poor with his fengshui skill. He was also known as 杨救贫 (yang the helper of the poor)

During the Ming dynasty, fengshui flourish once again. There are many fengshui stories related the Ming dynasty. It was said that the Ming emperor wanted to build a palace but to no success. Then one of the imperial astrolger had a dream about Lu Pan and his method. He used the method was could successfully complete the palace. The emperor was very happy and thus request the court to collate all the method of Lu Pan and named it 鲁班经.

By the Qing dynasty, there were 2 school of thought during that time. It was known as the 刑法 or Form School and the 理法 or the Reasoning/Calculation School. They were constantly quarrelling about their theory. The form school claimed that if the location is at the choice spot, it is enough but the reasoning/calculation school said that without the "Chi", even if the spot is good, it's not enough. For example, if the spot is located in a desert, without water, without greeneries, without roads, does the form school theory work? We only have to look at Las Vegas to verify. At a later stage, the form school and the reasoning/calculation theory combine to form the Ba Zhai(八宅). It was known as the 明镜八宅。

Finally, in the 明国, (the last 70 years) another school known as the flying star school 玄空飞星 was form. It was said that it includes the time factor as part of the fengshui. This school is presently the more popular choice.
