Recently my school sent a few students over to India for a community work project. I was offered to go too, but I turned it down since I was working full-time during the holidays. Sad

this is the stupa built on the place where the first discourse - turning of the wheel of dhamma was taught. there are three layers to the stupa.

this is the replica of the real thing in the museum. it is a dharmachakapravartan mudra - Buddha in a preaching posture (5th century AD) . Unfortunately this replica could not capture the essence of the real thing. don't ask for the real thing. photography is prohibited in the museum.

This is the ruin (stupa) next to the first stupa. This was where the Anatalakana Sutta - The Discourse on No-Self was taught.

This ruins are the fragment of monolithic pillar erected by the Mauryan Empire King Ashoka (272-232 BC). It is made from Chunar Sand Stone with the lions in four directions (now the emblem of the Government of India) on the top of the pillar. There is an inscription on the pillar which warns the monks and nuns against creating schism in the monks committee.

This first discourse was taught in Isitapana Deer Park some 2,500 years ago. The serenity of the place and seeing that deer and antelope still roam the park brings you back to time

Beside Isitapana Deer Park is this Jain temple. This sect is divided into 2 sect. the orthodox white dress sect and the unorthodox nudist sect.

My friend who visited the Ganges River said he saw floating corpses in the river.. not a lot, like 1 or 2, and everyone was ignoring the corpses happily bathing up/down river..... mebbe that's where the smell of death came from Neutral

if you look at the bottom right of the picture, the cremation activities was on. Just for info...only those who live a full live can be cremeated in the Ganges. those bachealor, spinsters, underage can only be buried. It is believed by the Hindus that those who were cremeated in the Ganges will escape the rebirth cycle and not born again

no....only the "saints" went nude but they are banned in the cities. you may see them in the remote region only.

This bodhi tree and complex - this tree was a sapling taken from Sri Lanka which originate from the original tree in bodhgaya (original tree was destroyed and the present tree in bodhgaya is also the sapling from Sri Lanka)

Notice the tablets surrounding this complex? It is the Dhammachaka pavattna sutta in various translation - korean, english, japanese, vietnamese etc...

On our way, we met many friendly indians. this shopkeeper proudly display his moustache and offered to pose for the picture.
