When you get to an older age, with kids to support, you have no
choice but to live to work. Not that you want it, but you
are forced into it. You finish your work and have nothing to
do, you still cannot go home, because the official knock-off time
is 5.30pm or 6pm. You want a more relaxing life, you want to switch
to another job, you look at your kids, and you think, "I don't want
my kids to suffer." So you continue. Not that it is easy to find
another job when you are near and over 40, because it is a
strange phenomenon in Singapore - employers want young,
inexperienced employees who are cheaper and more energetic
(nevermind that they take a longer time to complete the work).
Don't bother that the gahment keeps telling employers to hire
seniors - it will not happen (unless these are jobs which nobody
wants), and if it does, expect a very big pay cut.
Times are bad.
