missqi SG I discovered the wonders of Roald Dahl, and later, Enid Blyton.=) I remember my favorite Roald Dahl book was Matilda.=) Slowly I graduated to Nancy Drew, then Agatha Christie, and now Mitch Albom. Reading's wonderful! Sadly, time doesn't quite permit. Sadly, I hate to admit it, but I used to read the dictionary. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. In primary one, which is.... hmmmm.... ten years ago.
Kuali Baba SG I grew up speaking the language at home. Believe me when I say that my favourite reading material when I was 7 was the weekly Dinosaurs magazine.
udontknowme SG my younger sister could 'read' at the age of one. i used to read this certain book out loud soooo often that my sister could memorize the first 5 sentences...
ShrodingersCat SG Hmm I was from a Chinese speaking family but went to a missionary primary school with an angmo principal and foreign nuns and all that So the whole environment was conducive to learning the language. But yeah, reading a lot and enjoying it helps. Currently with my school kids (nursery level), I teach sight reading more than phonics cos phonics confuses them, especially when they don't know their alphabet very well yet!!

jetta SG Re: Phonics. I tend to agree with you. To this day, my son's spelling skills aren't so good. I used to teach preschool too!
