What do you think?
If we are taking leave, are we bound by HR laws to let our bosses know WHY we are taking leave?
Is it fair for boss to insist on knowing why u need to take leave, or else not approve ur leave?

if they insisted, i'd say because i hate you and i'm taking time off so that i'll not rush into your office and slit your throat...

if your boss insists, tell them that leave is a right and not a privilege.. it is part of the contract and if they don't like it, they can go jump in a pile of thumbtacks...

some bosses are just nosy...

i don't tell my boss unless i'm going overseas because it's in the contract that i gotta..

leave is ur entitlement, unless u are needed at work on that particular day, u dun have to report why u take leave.

HR Laws? Never heard of them.

It can't be true that the boss needs to know your moves outside the office. I mean....what if I'm taking leave to visit Geylang? Surely I don't have to write on the leave form "visiting Geylang"? Laughing

However, when I was in the army (many years ago), I remember we had to write the reason for taking leave. We would just write "personal admin", "clearing annual leave", "family matters", "holiday", "taking a break", or anything else ambiguous, general and silly, etc.

Could be just a procedural thing . May not mean boss really wants to know what are you going to do with the time off. Just give some generic reason like “family matter” . .. can’t find fault with that heheh

if u got silly boss like that, just say you are going for an interview with the competitor because they are promising higher pay

hehe actually this did not happen to me.. but a friend of mine confided this is happening to her and she is frustrated about it.. which set me thinking..

ok.. hmm a bit more background.. cos most of ur replies got to do with regular type of employment

let's say.. in the field of education, most teachers are entitled school holidays already.

You are allowed to take leave during school term IF it is something out of the ordinary and specific number of days are given for specific type of occasions - such as a 1 day for the day of a relative, 2-3 days for death of family member, 2 days for a wedding, etc.

Besides these, you are allowed 2 days in a year of these type of 'leave' but these 2 days have no specific 'reason' allocated to them. So let's say if you want to utilise these 2 days DURING school term - do you think the boss has the right to question what you intend to do?

I think it might be reasonable since the 2 days are not part of the annual leave allocation and also it's within the school term...teachers are generally not allowed planned leave during the school term.

if the point is to use the no-reason 2 days...use it in the school holiday period lor...

anyway....the problem sounds familiar...person-in-question in the preschool education field?
