PDA - you got or not har?

ShrodingersCat SG

I'm thinking of getting a PDA cos... well... It's good for me to be able to do my work when I'm on the go (i.e. travelling) without needing to bring my entire laptop. Mostly what I need to do is just using microsoft word.

So would like to ask those who own a PDA

Is it very inconvenient to use the PDA to do .. say.. reports? On Microsoft word? What else do you use your PDA for then? (Besides as an organiser)

FireIce SG

used to have one
bought for the sake of wanting to be seen with one
din fully utilise it in the end
left it to collect dust

pen and paper still most handy
sometime use the calendar/notes in hp

i have my laptop to keep track of my appointments/dates
in MS outlook calendar, post-its, notepad

I've got a Palm Zire 72. I used it primarily to listen to music and store my contacts, but since I've gotten my mp3, I'm not using it as much now. It has Microsoft Word and Excel, but compared to a laptop, the screen is very small and the functions are also limited. But if you are only using it to input words and viewing documents, it should be fine. Smile

The microsoft word got like Table function or not?

Hmm ya mostly use to type schedules and such

I tried taking my laptop around when I travelled but its really very heavy. Maybe if I get a PDA I might get a portable keyboard. Think that's lighter than a laptop for sure right?

FireIce SG

u can consider smartphone like dopod

alexkusu SG

wanted to get one..but got a simple 'smartphone' instead... has the office suite n editin functions inside, but realised i dun use it much.

how bout sth like netbook pro?

a mix between laptop n pda

I don't think it has Table function.. Yea, a portable keyboard will definitely be better than pointing to its built-in keyboard one alpahabet at a time.

ShrodingersCat SG

Dont like my phone to be too big...

This netbook pro type of thing.. very expensive right??

I mean, Can get a pretty good PDA for about $700... this type i think mebbe $1000++++++??

alexkusu SG

i think fone will be smaller than pda eh..

i tot of gettin a fone n pda separately..but its a pain to bring both of them around at the same time.

well, depends on ur budget. Sum smartphones can go up to 2k

i advise you to get a portable keyboard if you gonna do intensive word work…...because using your text input for typing is gonna kill you…

ShrodingersCat SG

yeah definitely will get a portable keyboard... like u say.. will probably get broken hand from carpal tunnel if want to write word doc.s on PDA Very Happy

Ok.. my inclinations are towards this PALM TX. Has wifi... but the o/s not sure whether as friendly as pOcket PC or not.

They also use the docs to go software. Those people who use it.. can tell me how easy it is/compatible to use with Microsoft Office Word or not huh??

alexkusu SG

u cud find software to resolve compatibility issues between the 2 systems

or, u cud get windows pda device.. there are many pirated software out there for dl Mr. Green

ShrodingersCat SG

Mr. Green

alexkusu SG

who could resist free stuff? Mr. Green

especially wen ur supposed to pay heaps of $$$ for it

ShrodingersCat SG

Sigh I lurve free stuff.

When I was in US i love to go to those free stuff webnsite and keep on filling forms up compulsively so they could send me free samples. Sad

I never use them. I just get a kick out of receiving them.

the Bear SG

i had one... but it became a gameboy after a while Laughing

people who already have their plans in their heads, or people who are totally disorganised, need not get one, especially when a filofax is better

ShrodingersCat SG

Heehee.. people who are totally disorganised referring to me?! Hurhurhur

Yahh.. I prefer a filofax for errr.. getting organised Razz

But since a lot of my work is just simple word processing, and I would like to do my work on the go.. (especially when I am travelling during the school hols!)... I thought I would get a PDA Razz

A laptop is too bulky. When I went Penang in March Hols.. wow.. lugging around a laptop in the hot hot hot hot hot Penang weather was no joke. Even if the food was good.

the Bear SG

no.. ME! Laughing

well, if you wanna get one for word processing, why not?

but i think there are other gadgets which will do that too.. but a PDA would be good if you learn how to write quickly with the stylus..

else gotta get another gadget which is a foldable keyboard... and it's kinda unwieldy and made more for the person who is seated at a desk...
