OK, this scenario...
Nurse sees elderly patient pulling out her feeding tube.
Nurse gets a new feeding tube and prepares to insert the tube so
that when feeding time comes round, the old lady can be fed via the
tube.
Patient struggles violently and shakes her head with great
strength, thrashing about. Nurse calls for help from colleagues
because patient is getting violent, kicking her and gripping her
wrist in a tight grip.
Nurse's colleagues help to hold patient down. One colleague holds
on to patient's head tightly to prevent her from shaking her head.
Finally, after a lot of difficulty and struggles, the feeding tube
is inserted but due to patient's movements, a bit of bleeding had
occured from the nose due to possible trauma.
Patient's family comes to visit around dinnertime, sees a drop of
dried blood near patient's nostril, and slight bruising on the
wrists where the patient was held down, ask about what happened.
When informed, they flew into a rage, saying that the nurses should
have been 'more gentle', and started to hurl accusations at the
nurses, and march right up to the Ward Sister, and threaten to
lodge a formal complaint over the 'mistreatment' and 'physical
abuse' of the patient.
What do you think of this scenario? And yes, it IS a real
incident.
