The Changing Face of Holland V

- There's a new branch of Eskibar in Holland V now! Mom and I saw the poor girls dressed in winter wear standing outside the stores yesterday and she said,...

Rhonda SG

After hearing Deathy talk about the Holland V Nasi Lemak, I had to go try it today.

It was delicious!! Very Happy Their sambal is sooo sedap!! And when I asked for more servings of sambal in my da bao pack, they gladly obliged!

Definitely a recommended eatery! Wink

Actually, some hawkers are those chin chai type... Unlike some Evil or Very Mad

Staying in HV too.

There is a new ABN-Amro ATM at Holland V Shopping Mall.
And Guardian take over the Sanwin Sports, no NEW bank.

TIONG BAHRU

HIP: High hip quotient with its Art-Deco flats.

Then there are the creative types like photographers, architects and lawyers
who form the neighbours.

RATING: 4 stars

HOT: A small estate and a potential
hotbed for singles to hook up with each other a la Melrose Place.

Just give it some time to evolve.

RATING: 4 stars

HAPPENING: Coffeeshops are a dime a dozen, so the food's excellent.

And the Tiong Bahru market is supposedly popular with tai-tais, who go in their chauffeured Mercs and Beemers to do their grocery shopping.

The estate is also a short walk to hip and happening Zouk. It's one straight road down to Jiak Kim Street, so you'll never lose your way in your drunken stupor.

RATING: 3 stars

HOLLAND VILLAGE

HIP: It's not nicknamed the Bohemian Village for nothing. Expatriates, locals, NUS undergrads and polytechnic students flock here for the vibrant coffee culture.

And the multitude of retail shops
and eateries here makes it the most happening meeting point in the west.

RATING: 4 stars

HOT: A large catchment of single expatriates and locals. The SPG-types will like it here.

RATING: 4 stars

HAPPENING: Lattes and mochas are the main orders of the day here. There is also no lack of good, albeit pricey, food judging from the French, Chinese and Italian restaurants here. Grocery shopping's a breeze with Cold Storage, NTUC Fairprice and the wet market. And shopping here is great - even better than some suburban malls.

RATING: 4 stars
MARINE PARADE

HIP: Sports enthusiasts can go roller-blading, swimming or canoeing in East Coast Park which is undergoing a $160 million transformation.

RATING: 3 stars

HOT: Not as many singles but hey, there's always the beach to go bird-watching (in more ways than one). The bikini-clad girls sun-bathing or rollerblading makes the whole jostling with the mad weekend crowd at the
beach bearable.

RATING: 3 stars

HAPPENING: With Parkway Parade and Marine Parade Central nearby, residents here have no lack of amenities. It's also a short walk from the East Coast and Joo Chiat neighbourhoods where there's no lack of good Peranakan, Italian and local cuisines.

Proximity to the beach opens up a whole basket of sporting activities such as canoeing, cycling and rollerblading. And

the cafes there are good for a lazy morning of people-watching.

RATING: 3 stars

Holland V captures the most number of stars compared to Marine Parade and Tiong Bahru, as reported in The New Paper.

I missed the open air cinema. The cinema was located at the current Holland V Shopping mall. It screened 2 times at 1930h and 2100h. It charged 30cents for children and 50cents for adults. It screened to a full house when popular movies was shown. Remembered once when people throw fire crackers into the cinema from outside. Many memories from this cinema.

Helloooo, iamgoondu! So, a fellow Holland-er? Wink Laughing

The Eski bar ladies are out at night again, distributing flyers and what-not. I feel sorry for them, decked out in such warm clothes in Singapore's humid weather! Razz

I just got the Nasi Lemak from Holland V AGAIN!

The staff at Subway are kinda unfriendly. The sign said that their opening hours was 10am. My watch said 2 mins to 10am. Still, they shoo'd me away, saying, 'Not open yet!' Razz

Wanted to eat the Teriyaki Chicken on a Parmesan Oregano 6" sandwich with Sweet Onion Sauce cuz today, that's at a special price of hmm... $4.90, I think!

Siiigh... maybe will go there later. Wink

I am. Having stayed here since the 80s. I am also the person who brought to straits times atttention on the delay of MUP for Holland Park View. Since it got reported in ST, the upgrading pace was now at full steam!

For those staying in Holland, Dover or Ghim Moh, I would like to brought to your attention about free movie screening in Biopolis. There are free movie screening on some Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesday in October and November. Hope they would continue screeing in December.

The auditorium is definitely better than Empress theatre in Clementi. The seats, the sound system are comparable to any GV cinemas. Pay a visit to the next Singapore wonders.

I think Sanwin Sports moved to Jelita.

Rhonda SG

For the benefit of those who haven't been down to Holland V in a while, take a peek at the new carpark!

(It's that white structure just in front of the block of flats in the background.)

And yesterday, the newspaper was kinda poking fun at the URA. They removed 116 or so lots because of the construction for the rail line. And then, they constructed these additional car park lots in the structure that sits above the existing car park, giving a total of 83 lots. And they expect to ease the parking situation there with 83 lots in exchange for 116?!! Surprised

Bad urban planning has reached a new record! Laughing

(And oh, nice to know that someone else's maths is worse than mine! ) Twisted Evil

Wanda SG

Oh...I can't help but say this....it's so ugly. Sad

Rhonda SG

It looks like a hurriedly-constructed structure. I thought that they could have done more to increase the parking lots there. For one, they could've built a multi-storey carpark instead of just this miserable 83-lot thingamajig. Razz

Y'know, I just won't be surprised if the architect is some academically well-endorsed chap who's still a greenhorn in his field and wet behind the ears. Razz

Oh well, in our society, paper qualifications do get you everywhere. Razz

LazerLordz SG

They were metal skeletons slapped to the ground and raised like an overturned hamster cage. Then slapped with concrete and it looks so out of place.Like some part of Brooklyn had appeared. Laughing

Rhonda SG

Ah well, at least, they bothered to put up spaces to plant plants around the structure. I saw skeletal branches and all that just now. When the plants grow, I think it just might be a pretty sight afterall. Wink

And I do hope that they're going to construct a multi-storey lot in future! Razz

Wanda SG

You won't be living there by then, anyway. Very Happy

neuros SG

yea... realised... right opp wala. it's pretty new, yea?

there's gelare too... same stretch as harry's... Mr. Green

Rhonda SG

So... are you turning up for our 1st Anniversary celebration? Wink
