What to do with nian gao?

No problemo. I wasn't a fan either. But living away from home, anything from home also sounds good to me.

yah.. pisang goreng batter, the type which is not like the malay type of batter but the type where you get with the chinese version... light and flaky instead of hard and chunky..

that's good coz it cooks quickly and you don't need to fry it too long..

be careful with how long you put it in coz it burns easily..

Bear's version sounds very gao nan tu leh. I'm not that pro leh.

Today, I'm going to use half tray of the nian gao to try the cornflour in egg. Then, if successful, I will use the other half with the batter, say tomorrow or next Saturday.

also hor...must the nian gao be dried in the sun till its hard first before cooking?

my nian gao is still very soft leh...vaguely remeber my grandmother sunning the nian gaos first before cooking..and then sandwiching it between two thinly sliced slivers of sweet potatos and dipping in batter and frying....
is that correct??

u buy coconut and put ur nian gao into it then u can see liao....

That was what my grandma and mom did too.

I don't think you can deep-fry the nian gao when it is still very soft cause it will become an ooey-gooey mess. Razz

Also, you probably would have to use the flash-frying technique.

actually, sunning the thing is to prevent it from becoming moldy Razz

the pisang goreng batter, you can buy from the supermarkets but the result is kinda dark coz the batter burns easily..

alternatively, you can make a batter with water and self-raising flour... beat an egg, dip the slices into the egg (to hold the batter better) then into the batter.. flash-fry immediately Wink

Regret to advise that my "experiment" failed. Sad Wonders where I went wrong. See? The nian gao is still as brown as ever. No sign of any egg coating. Sad

But I am undeterred. I will try the batter recipe this weekend. Wish me luck. Wink

ls, maybe u can buy tempura coating ...dip NG slices in beaten egg n coat with the coating
