elindra SG BWAHAHAHHAHA WAHAHAHHAHAHA Luckily I'm alone in the office right now coz I couldn't contain my laughter
bismarck SG my mum asked me to work for this NZ chinese restaurant by translating their equally misguided menus
Fatum SG well .... some resturants over here do practise literal translation too if you think about it ....... "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall anyone ? ..... "
kalangkabo SG the irony is many of the chinese words are "sound-literal" translation from the original english names e.g toast -> duo shi sandwich -> san wen zhi when translated back to english, it becomes another thing altogether...
Rhonda SG And I thought the Japanese were bad! In the '80's, I always giggled at the words they have on their cutesy stationery and stuff! ''Hello! I am Poko! Piki is my friend. We good very long. You wanna be my fiend?'' ''Mimi is a cat loves cookie food!'' Stuff like that!
Wanda SG The cutesy Jap ones cannot beat the PRC in hilarity and incredibility. I'll see if I can find that classic one to show u...u will laugh until peng!
Rhonda SG OK, today, I recommend that we start our meal with The Chicken Hates The Soup Of, then maybe sandwiches? Swallow to Take the Fish Sand or Butter Many Privates? Next, shall we have the exotic The Pig Picks The Elder Brother a Cloth or Fuck to Burn The Of, or The Fried Chicken is as Well? Or maybe, you prefer the Day Type Many Springs Fish? AAAAaaaaahhh HARharharhahahahaha!!!
kalangkabo SG not only in china. in taiwan and hong kong also... e.g. fans -> fen si (as in ppl who like some movie stars etc.) cast -> ka si (actors in a movie) so if translated back, it becomes "powder silk" and "card silk"??? isn't there proper chinese terms for these? is the chinese language slowly being assimilated into the western/english language? even the radio and tv news broadcators are using these "sound-literal " words when there are proper chinese terms around!!!
Wanda SG Another real life example for disposable items, eg. gloves. In Chinese = yi1 ci4 xin4 yong4 ping3 (literally is 'one time use utility item) Kena translated in PRC into 'one time sex use item'.
Kan_i SG wow what ever shall i choose for dinner? sounds like every dish is an adventure withing themselves
